Highlights

  • In March 2026, Netflix established INKubator studio, a GenAI-native animation unit.
  • Its hybrid production model blends traditional animation with AI workflows, aiming for faster and cost-efficient content creation.
  • AI in animation debate intensifies as Netflix expands into generative AI with a dedicated studio.

Netflix has confirmed the launch of INKubator, also referred to as INK, an in-house generative AI animation studio that the streamer established in March 2026. Netflix described it as a “next-generation, creative-led, GenAI-native animation studio,” developed to expand animation works using AI.

According to Netflix, the studio is recruiting CG artists, engineers, and production staff with experience in machine learning-assisted animation, virtual production, and AI workflow. The studio first surfaced through The Verge’s reporting on May 14 and public job listings on Netflix's careers site before the company acknowledged it.

INKubator is led by industry veteran Serrena Iyer (COO), who has previously held strategy and management roles at DreamWorks Animation, MRC Studios, and A24 Films. That leadership profile positions INKubator as a serious production operation.

Netflix Says INKubator Studio Will Focus on New Production Models

Netflix told Cartoon Brew that INK is designed to provide an “artist-focused environment” to creators to “explore how new tools and workflows, alongside traditional animation creative practices, can be leveraged to enhance their storytelling capabilities.”

However, the streamer also clarified that Netflix Animation Studios' films will continue using traditional animation techniques. It seems that Netflix is positioning INK alongside its previous animation studio to create a new animation model that blends traditional and AI-assisted animation, resulting in faster and lower-cost animation pipelines.

INKubator follows Netflix's March acquisition of InterPositive, Ben Affleck’s AI filmmaking startup, with an estimated deal of up to $600 million USD. InterPositive focuses on AI in post-production.

The move places Netflix among the first streaming platforms to formally establish a dedicated AI-centered animation unit rather than using Gen-AI only as an experimental production tool. However, INKubator arrives as the growing use of AI in entertainment has resulted in ongoing debate around creative ownership and human labor concerns.
