Ishimori Production’s upcoming Cyborg 009: Nemesis anime has added veteran voice actor Yūki Kaji as the franchise protagonist Joe Shimamura. Kaji is best known for voicing Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan and Shoto Todoroki in My Hero Academia.
Eren’s role won him Crunchyroll Anime Awards (Best Voice Actor) in 2022 and 2023 consecutively. Cyborg 009: Nemesis anime premieres in the Summer 2026 season; a specific date has not been announced. The production committee revealed the casting update alongside new promotional material: a character visual of the anime’s Nemesis group.
Shotaro Ishinomori created the classic Cyborg 009 franchise back in 1964; since then, it has expanded across anime, movies, spin-offs, and cross-title collaborations. However, Cyborg 009: Nemesis is not a direct reboot of previous works, but a new story set within the franchise's universe.
What is Cyborg 009: Nemesis About?
The new Cyborg 009 anime adaptation revisits Ishinomori’s classic sci-fi premise about nine humans turned into enhanced weapons or Cyborgs by Black Ghost organization. The mainline franchise character lineup includes globally diverse heroes with specialized abilities, led by Joe Shimamura, known as 009.
Cyborg 009: Nemesis’ plot will focus on the emergence of the Nemesis organization, which believes that 009 and his allies are incapable of guiding the world to peace. This opposing group will be led by Graviton, not Joe.
Graviton is voiced by Yūichi Nakamura, known for voicing iconic characters like Satoru Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen), Gray Fullbuster (Fairy Tail), and Hawks (My Hero Academia). "He’s cold-blooded and a character with very strong convictions. He’ll stop at nothing to achieve his goals,” emphasized Nakamura in a statement cited by Crunchyroll.
Cyborg 009: Nemesis Anime Production
Cyborg 009: Nemesis anime was first announced in July 2025, with the trailer releasing in January 2026. The anime, produced by Arect and directed by Hideki Ambo, has been in production for almost a year.
Atsuhiro Tomioka and CHARATEX have handled the screenplay, while sanorin oversaw the character design. Ambo previously directed Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune, while Tomioka was the series composer on the Fairy Tail sequel 100 Years Quest.
To maintain the originality, the production is bringing back the opening theme song, Taga Tame ni by singer Kyoko, used in the 1979 Cyborg 009 television series. The revival of Cyborg 009, featuring a veteran cast, coincides with the recent anime industry trend of reviving prominent classic IPs.
The franchise has sustained adaptation and popularity for almost six decades. With its summer launch window approaching, additional announcements and distribution details for Cyborg 009 Nemesis anime are expected shortly.
