Highlights

  • Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced became a blockbuster, selling over 3 million copies globally in its first week.
  • Following a "Very Positive" Steam rating, developers confirmed a New Game+ mode is actively in development.
  • Despite generating $35.1M on Steam, the launch was marred by pre-planned layoffs that disbanded Ubisoft Barcelona.

Ubisoft’s swashbuckling pirate remake, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, has officially become a bona fide blockbuster, selling more than 3 million copies globally within just seven days of its July 9 launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. To celebrate this massive commercial milestone, publisher Ubisoft and its newly formed Vantage Studios banner confirmed that an active development team is already building a dedicated New Game+ mode.

The official Assassin's Creed account on X leaned into the nautical celebration, thanking fans for "sharing tall tales about your Caribbean adventures" and promising to "keep the adventures going with New Game+ later on, mates." This rapid momentum marks one of Ubisoft's fastest-selling recent releases, proving that fans are still hungry for celebrated single-player action when it receives a proper modern upgrade.

The commercial trajectory of Edward Kenway’s return to the Caribbean has been sharp from the very first day, when the remake sold an astonishing 2M copies in just 24 hours before moving another million over the following six days. Platform-specific data highlights just how widespread this demand is, with industry reports showing the title has already sold more than 700,000 copies on Steam alone, generating over $35.1 million USD in revenue on the storefront.

On PC, SteamDB metrics show the title maintaining robust daily engagement, logging between 45,000 and 60,000 peak concurrent players while easily securing a firm position in the platform's top-five global revenue charts. In fact, Black Flag Resynced sold over five times more pre-launch copies on Steam than Assassin's Creed Shadows and landed Steam Deck Verified status right out of the gate, giving Ubisoft a much-needed victory in an industry where publishers frequently hide behind ambiguous player counts.

New Game+ Mode

To build on this early launch success rather than simply moving on from it, Game Director Richard Knight confirmed during a community broadcast that New Game+ is now in the works. While no specific release window was given, the mode will allow returning players to restart the campaign while retaining all of their accumulated ship upgrades, character levels, mastery points, and unlocked gear, with Knight teasing the potential inclusion of exclusive new progression rewards. The feature is considered a natural and low-risk addition for the developers, as the engineering team is taking cues from the replay framework previously established by associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois for Assassin's Creed Shadows, giving the three million-plus players who already bought in a compelling reason to stick around.

Player sentiment surrounding the remake has only strengthened since release, bolstered by a wave of rapid post-launch technical support. While early community reactions saw some friction over roughly $85 worth of optional day-one cosmetic DLC and microtransactions, that controversy failed to dent retail sales meaningfully, and subsequent quality-of-life patches quickly pushed English user reviews on Steam to a "Very Positive" rating.

Rebuilt from scratch using the modern Anvil engine by developers including Ubisoft Singapore and Ubisoft Quebec, the updated architecture delivers ray-traced lighting and reflections, modernized parry-driven sword combat, and completely overhauled physics for naval warfare. By stripping away bloated role-playing mechanics in favor of a focused, visually stunning pirate adventure, Ubisoft has successfully reconnected with its core audience.

From a business perspective, the triumph of Black Flag Resynced provides immediate stability and credibility to Ubisoft’s Tencent-backed Vantage Studios structure, arriving at a time when gamers had started seriously doubting whether the company could deliver a great Assassin's Creed experience again.

However, a dark cloud still hangs over this celebratory launch window. Just days after the game shipped, Ubisoft moved forward with a corporate restructuring that disbanded its Barcelona studio, laying off 51 employees who had spent years working on the very title driving these chart-topping sales numbers. Reports indicate the cuts were planned well before launch and had nothing to do with the software's performance, adding a bittersweet note to what is otherwise a resilient economic demonstration of the power of premium, solo-driven action games.
