Amazon will cut about 14,000 corporate jobs to reduce bureaucracy and align its workforce with future goals. The move, announced on its website, comes even as the company reports strong performance.
Beth Galetti, senior vice president of People Experience and Technology, said the move will mean an “overall reduction in our corporate workforce of approximately 14,000 roles.” She added that while Amazon will continue hiring in key areas, some divisions will see significant cuts.
According to Reuters, the reductions will affect departments including human resources, operations, devices and services, and Amazon Web Services. Bloomberg reported that the company’s gaming division will also face “significant role reductions” at its Irvine and San Diego offices, with less emphasis on large-scale online titles.
Amazon Layoffs: Focus on Leaner Structure and Efficiency
Most employees at risk will have about 90 days to secure new internal roles. Those unable to transition within the company will receive severance pay, health benefits, and outplacement support.
The restructuring extends CEO Andy Jassy’s broader initiative to simplify Amazon’s hierarchy and eliminate “excess bureaucracy.” Jassy has previously outlined a goal for Amazon to operate “like the world’s largest startup,” emphasizing agility, innovation, and faster decision-making.
Galetti said artificial intelligence is reshaping Amazon’s strategy, describing it as the most transformative technology since the Internet. The company plans to channel resources into AI-driven operations and long-term growth areas while scaling back functions seen as less critical.
Despite steady results, the company said it must stay agile amid rapid tech and market shifts. The Amazon layoffs reflect a wider tech trend toward balancing innovation with cost efficiency.
The Amazon layoffs 2025 underscore Amazon’s shift toward a leaner structure and greater investment in emerging technologies, marking one of its largest corporate overhauls in recent years.
