Will GTA 6 Revive the Stagnating Console Market?
Can GTA 6 Rescue the Stagnant Console Market Despite Costs?
Despite soaring console prices and a $79.99 price tag, unprecedented Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders are expected to rescue the stagnating console market this November.
Highlights
- Surging component prices have driven up console costs, pushing the standard PS5 to $649.99 and increasing Xbox prices just ahead of the holiday season.
- Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick remains confident that massive demand and historic, astonishing pre-orders for GTA 6 will overcome these financial barriers.
- Priced at $79.99 for its digital edition, GTA 6 is heavily relied upon to rescue a stagnating console market by forcing players to finally upgrade their hardware.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to be the biggest entertainment launch of the decade when it arrives on November 19, 2026, but stepping into Vice City is going to cost players more than ever before. The unexpected AI arms race is driving up hardware costs and the price of PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles has suddenly skyrocketed just in time for the game's release. Despite this mounting financial barrier for consumers, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick remains highly confident that the overwhelming demand for the blockbuster title will easily bulldoze any pricing hurdles.
Speaking directly to investors during an earnings call, Zelnick addressed the rising tide of hardware prices without sugarcoating the situation. He openly admitted that the rising cost of hardware is a negative for the market, noting that a lower price point naturally puts more consoles into players' hands. However, he emphasized that the publisher does not view these soaring costs as a major headwind because they are delivering an experience that people desperately want to play.
In a separate interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick doubled down on this optimism. He expressed skepticism that the current component shortage, "RAMageddon", would lead to a lack of available consoles this holiday season, noting that the overall install base is fully expected to meet the company's original expectations.
The reality of entering the current console generation has become a shockingly pricey endeavor for the average gamer. This past April, Sony adjusted its hardware prices due to global economic pressures, pushing the standard PlayStation 5 to $649.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99, and the premium PS5 Pro to a staggering $899.99. Microsoft quickly followed suit in August, raising its 512 GB Xbox Series X and S models by $100 and its 1 TB models by $150, citing memory and storage costs that have spiked by more than two and a half times.

Rockstar Games
Rescuing a Stagnated Console Market
The software itself is also pushing boundaries, with Rockstar Games pricing the digital-only standard edition of GTA 6 at $79.99. Zelnick has aggressively defended this price tag, calling it an incredible bargain given the ballooning costs of modern video game development. For the wider video game industry, Grand Theft Auto 6 is being heavily relied upon to rescue a console market that has stagnated in recent years.
Millions of players who have been slow to upgrade from older hardware will finally be forced to buy a modern PlayStation or Xbox if they want to play the most anticipated release in over ten years, as per Kotaku.
Fortunately for those waiting to take the plunge, Sony, which has a massive marketing deal with Rockstar for the game's launch, and reassured investors that it has secured all the RAM needed to supply the expected number of consoles heading into early 2027. Industry watchers believe that as long as the cheapest version of a new console stays below the $700 mark, dedicated players will scrape together whatever it takes to get their hands on the sprawling open-world game.
Looking ahead, Zelnick told investors that pre-order performance for GTA 6 has already been "unprecedented" and "astonishing." Driven by this historic early surge, Take-Two is comfortably maintaining its massive fiscal 2027 net bookings forecast of between $8 billion USD and $8.2B, entirely confident that gamers will show up in record numbers come November.
