Highlights

  • Capcom anticipates the industry's shift toward digital-only consoles will have no significant impact on its business.
  • The publisher's profits continue to soar, fueled largely by PC dominance & the success of digital blockbusters like Resident Evil Requiem.
  • With physical media rapidly becoming a niche segment, Capcom forecasts its digital unit sales will expand even further, reaching a massive 95% market share by March 2027

Japanese gaming powerhouse Capcom has a reassuring message for anyone worried about the video game industry’s rapid march toward an all-digital future: they are practically there already. While players and retailers have spent the last month expressing deep concern over what the shrinking physical market means for the medium, the publisher behind blockbuster franchises like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter remains completely unfazed. According to the company, major industry shifts away from physical discs simply won't have a significant impact on its overall business, primarily because a massive 90% of its total game sales already come from digital channels.

The conversation around the survival of physical media reached a fever pitch a month ago when Sony announced it would discontinue physical disc games for PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. This upcoming change sparked fierce debate online, which has been compounded by ongoing rumors surrounding Microsoft's future hardware. With Xbox reportedly preparing a disc-to-digital system that will let players turn their current Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs into digital purchases, speculation is mounting that its upcoming Project Helix console may follow suit and release as a digital-only platform.

However, when asked during a recent Q&A session what impact they anticipate from this shrinking physical game market in the medium to long term, Capcom’s official reply was confident. “Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital," the company stated. "We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time.”

Capcom’s relaxed stance is easy to understand from a business point of view when you look at its explosive financial records. Driven by an overwhelming player reliance on digital storefronts, the publisher recently reported another incredibly strong quarter with sales and profits soaring year-on-year. For its first fiscal quarter spanning April 1 to June 30, Capcom reported staggering net sales of $430 million USD, representing a massive 54.7% increase compared to the same period last year.

PC Dominance and the Success of Resident Evil Requiem

Operating profit also saw a huge leap, growing by 66.9% to hit $250M. The sheer volume of games flying off the digital shelves is impressive, with global unit sales jumping to 23.81M games this quarter, up from 14.16M a year ago. A prime example of this ongoing success is the hit title Resident Evil Requiem, which has already crossed 8M copies sold, as per VGC Gaming.

The PC platform continues to be the dominant engine fueling this massive digital expansion. During the latest quarter, PC digital sales made up 60.4% of Capcom’s digital total, easily outpacing the 32.9% seen on consoles.

Overall, Capcom sold an incredible 54.93M digital units out of 59.07 M total games sold globally during that year, pushing digital to a 93% market share. Capcom expects this trend to only intensify, forecasting that digital unit sales will reach an astonishing 95% by the end of the current fiscal year in March 2027.

While the data paints a clear picture that physical media is rapidly becoming a niche segment of Capcom's overall enterprise, fans who still love collecting boxes shouldn't panic entirely just yet. However, with more than nine out of every ten games they sell are already being purchased with a simple click rather than at a cash register, major hardware shifts toward digital-only ecosystems pose almost zero risk to the beloved publisher's long-term profitability.
