Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey Revives Ubisoft Game
Console platforms lead player growth as subscribers return to ancient Greece.
Highlights
- The Odyssey film sparked a major resurgence in Assassin's Creed Odyssey player activity.
- Subscription services fueled most of the game's post-release console growth.
- Analysts say cross-media releases continue driving players back to legacy titles.
Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey is driving renewed interest in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Analytics firms reported a sharp rise in player activity across PC and consoles following the film's July 17, 2026, release. Data from Alinea Analytics and Video Game Insights (VGI) suggests the eight-year-old game gained momentum primarily through returning players instead of new buyers.
The trend highlights how major film releases can revive interest in older games.
Alinea Analytics reported that combined daily active users (DAUs) across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox increased from 122K on the film's opening day to 233K within ten days, a 90% jump. VGI reported a similar trend. Its data showed DAUs climbing from more than 150K to 238K by July 26. Around the same time, Ubisoft encouraged players to return with a social media post inviting them to revisit Ancient Greece.
Film Adaptations Continue to Boost Older Games
The trend is not unique to Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
VGI pointed to Amazon Prime Video's Fallout series as another example. After the first season premiered, DAUs for Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 increased by 225%. VGI also recorded notable sales and engagement gains following the second season. At the same time, average Steam concurrent players doubled from around 20K to more than 40K.
Subscription Services Fueled Console Growth
Most of the growth came from consoles, with Xbox DAUs jumping 134% from 36K to 84K. Likewise, PlayStation DAUs almost doubled to 114K, while Steam recorded a more modest 26% increase.
Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, pointed out that Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus played a major role because players could access the game without buying it separately. He added that software sales have reached around 400K copies this year, but "the real here is pure player engagement."
Elliott also stated the film brought a large number of players back and could give Ubisoft "great ammunition for an eventual AC Odyssey Resynced." The latest figures suggest how successful film and television adaptations can continue extending the lifespan of established game franchises.
