Highlights

  • Square Enix's Dragon Quest Smash/Grow generated $34.4 million in gross player spending across its first three months after launching on April 20, 2026.
  • The Japanese market drove 90% of the total earnings with $30.8M, followed by Taiwan and the US.
  • Despite experiencing a post-launch revenue decline from its $19.4M first month, the roguelite RPG received a temporary 565% spending surge following the Version 1.2 update.

Square Enix has scored another major hit in the mobile gaming arena. Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, the publisher's fast-paced roguelite RPG, has generated an impressive $34.4 million USD in gross player spending across its first three months on the market. Following its global launch on April 20, 2026, the title quickly established a massive early revenue footprint. These figures strictly account for spending across the major mobile app stores, which means total earnings are likely even higher when you factor in revenue from in-game advertisements and external web shops.

The vast majority of revenue during this first quarter-year was driven almost entirely by players in Japan. The Japanese market contributed a staggering $30.8M of the total sum, accounting for an overwhelming 90% of global earnings. Other regions trailed far behind the Japanese market. Taiwan ranked second in global player spending by generating $1.3M, which represents roughly 4% of the total revenue. The US followed in third place, contributing $973,000, or approximately 3% of global spending.

The game itself rewards player adaptability through a weapons-based gacha system. As players battle through procedural dungeon runs and face down hordes of monsters, they collect random blessings, as well as attack, defense, and healing crystals that unlock unique ability combinations every run. Players can also swap between classic RPG classes like the thief, mage, and warrior, spending premium Gems on character and equipment pulls.

This loop resonated immediately with gamers around the globe. According to KLab, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow surpassed 1M downloads worldwide on its very first day. That launch momentum carried through the following weeks, with the title crossing 5M cumulative downloads globally by May 1, 2026.

Launch Momentum Leads to a $1.4M Daily Spending Peak

Monetization started modestly on launch day, bringing in just $58,000, but player engagement quickly surged more than tenfold the next day to reach $668,000 on April 21. Daily spending eventually hit its absolute peak one week after launch on April 28, generating more than $1.4M in a single 24-hour window, as per Pocketgamer.biz.

While the three-month revenue total is a major success, digging deeper into the monthly timeline reveals a familiar free-to-play trend: sharp post-launch decay. In fact, daily spending has not surpassed the $1M mark since April 29. When looking at the broader picture, monthly earnings have roughly halved with each passing month since release.

During its blockbuster first month, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow generated a massive $19.4M. That figure fell by more than 50% in month two, bringing in $9.4M. By the third month, player spending had slid further to $5.6M. This decline occurred even as Square Enix rolled out continuous incremental updates and story events, tapping into decades of IP history with an in-game crossover celebrating Dragon Quest VI.

However, major version updates have proven capable of shocking the economy back to life, even if only temporarily. When Version 1.2 officially launched on July 7, it triggered an immediate spending surge of 565% compared to the day prior, pulling in $633,000 in just 24 hours.

This strong $34.4M start comes during a notable period of transition for Square Enix's mobile division. Fellow RPG title Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is currently winding down, with online service officially scheduled to end after three years on October 6, 2026. Ever Crisis actually performed slightly better out of the gate, earning $43.4M in its first three months before steadily declining toward a lifetime gross of $143.9M.

Meanwhile, Square Enix still relies on its reigning mobile champion: the location-based titan Dragon Quest Walk. Since its release in 2019, that single title has generated an astounding $2B across major app stores, proving that while Smash/Grow is off to a great start, it still has plenty of dungeon floors to climb to reach the publisher's top ranks.
