Highlights

  • Fate/Extra Record is delayed indefinitely after Bandai Namco officially exited the project.
  • Pre-orders are being refunded following a mutual split between Type-Moon and the publisher.
  • Development remains active under Kazuya Niino as the studio seeks a new publishing partner.

Fans looking forward to stepping back into the sci-fi world of the Fate series have a bit of a wait ahead of them. Fate/Extra Record, the highly anticipated remake of the 2010 PSP classic, has been delayed indefinitely and will completely miss its planned Spring 2026 release window. To add to the disappointment, developer Type-Moon and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment have officially parted ways, meaning the massive distributor is stepping away from the project entirely.

Because of this sudden shift, Bandai Namco is halting all distribution plans immediately and automatically issuing full refunds for any pre-orders across all platforms to ease the blow, as per Anime News Network.

The news broke directly from the official Type-Moon studio BB X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday. According to the studio, which operates under the corporate publishing name Notes Co., Ltd., the split was a mutual decision. After some discussions, both sides agreed it was best to take a step back and restructure the game's development framework.

While Bandai Namco issued a brief apology to fans without going into the specifics of the separation, Type-Moon wants to reassure the community that the game is absolutely not canceled. Active development continues unabated, and the team promises to share updates on a revised release date and a new publishing partner as soon as things are locked down behind the scenes.

Previous Delays and the Returning Creative Team

This isn't the first time the game has seen a setback. Originally revealed back in July 2020 to celebrate the original title's 10th anniversary, the deck-based RPG was initially targeting a 2025 launch before being pushed to this spring. Despite the current limbo, the project still boasts a strong creative foundation.

Kazuya Niino, who produced the original Fate/Extra and worked on the first Etrian Odyssey, is leading the charge as director and planner. Beloved character designer Arco Wada is also back on board. When the revamped RPG eventually arrives, it is still slated to launch on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.

For those unfamiliar with this specific corner of the massive franchise, the original Fate/Extra was released in Japan by Marvelous Entertainment and Type-Moon in 2010, eventually making its way to North America through Aksys Games in November 2011. It was followed up by a companion game, Fate/Extra CCC, in March 2013.

Expanding the Broader Fate Gaming Universe

These games take place in an alternate sci-fi continuity of the Fate universe that fans affectionately call the "Extraverse." The storyline was even adapted into a 10-episode television anime called Fate/Extra Last Encore by studio SHAFT in January 2018, which later streamed globally on Netflix alongside a special three-episode follow-up subtitled Illustrias Geocentrism.

The "Extraverse" has seen plenty of other spin-offs over the years, too. Marvelous launched the action-heavy Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star in November 2016 for PlayStation consoles before XSEED Games brought it West and expanded it to PC and Switch. That was followed by the enhanced Fate/EXTELLA LINK in 2018.

While fans wait for Record to find its footing and secure a new publisher, the broader Fate gaming universe remains highly active, most recently with Koei Tecmo's action RPG Fate/Samurai Remnant, which launched worldwide across consoles and PC in September 2023.
