GTA 6’s World Brings Politics, Satire, and NPCs to Life

Rockstar explains GTA 6’s approach to characters and world-building.

Highlights

  • GTA 6 expands Leonida with more detailed world-building and environmental storytelling.
  • Rockstar is using satire and fictional politics to shape the game’s setting.
  • Jason and Lucia’s contrasting personalities will play a key role in the story.

Rockstar Games is designing GTA 6 so that Leonida remains worth listening to even when players are not following the main story. New details from LOVE Magazine reveal a world filled with hundreds of conversations, radio commercials, fictional political campaigns, robocalls, and political talk shows, with parts of the environment designed to withstand closer attention.

The approach extends beyond ambient dialogue.

Rockstar says conspiracy theories and unusual public reactions to everyday events influenced the writing. Leonida’s satire pushes contemporary reality into something larger, stranger, and more grotesque.

Political Campaigns Extend Beyond GTA 6’s Street-Level Details

Ambrosia is a sugar-producing town inspired by Florida’s Clewiston and Lake Okeechobee areas. The town is currently holding a mayoral election involving Erin Henshaw, who has backing from a sugar company.

The election will not exist only through campaign placards. Players can encounter:

  • Political talk shows discussing the election
  • NPCs talking about the race
  • Campaign advertisements while driving
  • Satire focused on modern “culture wars”
  • Robocalls and other radio advertising

Rockstar Open World Writing Director, James Horton, described the approach by saying, “There’s foreground you’re not paying attention to right now.”

Likewise, Senior Vice President of Narrative, Rupert Humphries, stated that Rockstar wanted the setting to go beyond simply reflecting reality. The studio instead aims to make its version of the modern world “more over the top, more insane, more in your face.”

Rockstar Builds GTA 6’s Protagonists Around Their Flaws

The same philosophy shapes Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

The magazine describes Lucia as determined to improve her life. Jason, meanwhile, is more often pushed into decisions by the circumstances around him. Rockstar wanted both characters to have strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to be resilient and vulnerable, right or wrong, while learning from each other.

Game writer, Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern, said, “We wanted both protagonists to be vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other.” In addition, a veteran game writer, Alexa D’Agostino, added that giving characters their own wants and motivations creates people who can feel imperfect but real.

Lucia is also the first playable female GTA protagonist in the series’ 28-year history to have her own backstory, voice, and leading dialogue.

The character details support GTA 6’s Bonnie and Clyde-style narrative, which places Jason and Lucia against a setting defined by extreme wealth and ambition.
