Indian Mobile Game Studio Reaches 100 Million Players

Highlights

  • Indian mobile game MaskGun has surpassed 100 million players worldwide.

  • SuperGaming recently raised $15 million in funding to fuel its global expansion.

SuperGaming, a video game studio based in Pune, India, announced in early September that its mobile shooter game "MaskGun" has reached 100 million players worldwide since launching in January 2019, marking a notable achievement for the growing Indian gaming sector.

The milestone represents significant scale for a studio outside the traditional gaming hubs of the United States, Japan and China, though SuperGaming has not disclosed details about user retention rates or revenue figures that would provide fuller context about the game's commercial performance.

Players have collectively logged over 40 million hours in MaskGun and created millions of in-game clans, according to the company. The game's sustained popularity has been supported by SuperGaming's proprietary technology platform, SuperPlatform, which the company says enables stable multiplayer experiences for large numbers of simultaneous players.

"When we started making MaskGun, we never imagined it would become a community this large and vibrant," John said in a statement. "This milestone belongs entirely to our players. The best part about MaskGun has never been the guns or the maps; it's the people. Their friendships, rivalries, and stories have made this journey special.

Funding Fuels Expansion Plans

The announcement coincides with recent growth fueled by a $15 million Series B funding round in August, led by Skycatcher and Steadview Capital, with participation from investors including a16z Speedrun, Bandai Namco 021 Fund, and Polygon Ventures. The round includes both fresh capital and interim investments made since the company's $5.5 million funding in October 2021. The funding round values SuperGaming at approximately $100 million, a fivefold increase from the $21 million valuation following its previous round.

The new capital will support SuperGaming's international expansion into markets such as Latin America and the Middle East, as well as the development of new games. The company's portfolio now includes "Indus," a battle royale title that has been downloaded over 9 million times across platforms and won accolades including Best Made in India Game in Google Play's 2024 awards, noted for its cultural integration and innovative "Grudge system."

Beyond MaskGun and Indus, its portfolio features games such as "Battle Stars," "Silly Royale," and "Tower Conquest," collectively achieving over 200 million installs globally.

The success occurs amid broader growth in India's gaming industry, which has attracted increased investor attention as smartphone adoption has accelerated across South Asia. However, the sector faces familiar challenges including intense competition from established international developers and the difficulty of converting large user bases into sustainable revenue.

For SuperGaming, reaching 100 million MaskGun players validates its community-driven development approach and positions the company well for future growth in the global gaming market.
