Originally released for PlayStation 4 in Japan on Feb 23, 2017, the game launched in North America on March 7, 2017, and in Europe on March 10, 2017.
A PC version followed via Steam on March 17, 2017, with an Xbox One release arriving worldwide on June 26, 2018. The “Game of the YoRHa Edition” launched for PlayStation 4 and PC worldwide in February 2019. Subsequently, “The End of YoRHa Edition” followed with its release on Nintendo Switch on Oct 6, 2022.
The NieR: Automata’s sales milestone in the 2026 update arrives with renewed speculation about the franchise’s future. The closing line of the anniversary trailer, “NieR: Automata to be continued…," however, offers no specifics.
Meanwhile, the series has previously expanded beyond games into stage plays, novels, manga, anime, merchandise, and collaborations.
The last new game release was Nier Reincarnation, a mobile title launched in 2021, that has since ended global service. Square Enix also stated in late 2025 that it was preparing “just a little something” for the series.
With 10M NieR: Automata copies sold, the franchise remains commercially active, even as its next project remains undefined.
