Pokémon is officially entering the social deduction genre with Are You, Perhaps, a Rocket Grunt?, a brand-new spin-off board game launching in Japan this November. Co-developed by The Pokémon Company and tabletop maker Yoka Games, the upcoming project shifts the spotlight away from traditional hero journeys to center entirely on the Kanto region's infamous criminal organization. While the physical board game is currently only confirmed for a Japanese release in November 2026, it may have a potential of a worldwide launch in the future.

The announcement arrived via the official Japanese Pokémon news account on X, giving fans a tantalizing first look at the tabletop artwork and release window while telling them to stay tuned for more details. While concrete rules and mechanics remain under wraps, the playful title strongly implies a gameplay style similar to party hits like Among Us and classic Werewolf. The teaser art features a hooded Pokémon trainer with an obscured face standing beside Pikachu and Koffing, one of Team Rocket's signature Poison-type Pokémon.

The image also reveals two distinct playing cards included in the box, both depicting Pikachu and what appears to be a trainer sending them into battle. By daring players to uncover who might secretly be working for the enemy, the game marks a massive, innovative step into social deception for a franchise that has traditionally avoided the genre.

A Modern Revival for Kanto's Infamous Criminal Organization

This tabletop adventure builds on a steady wave of recent Team Rocket fan service that has swept through the series over the past few years. Longtime fans recognize the villains from their attempts to recruit victorious players on Kanto's Nugget Bridge, leader Giovanni's grand schemes involving Mewtwo, and the relentless anime antics of Jessie, James, and Meowth.

That criminal legacy has enjoyed a major modern revival, starting with last year's Glory of Team Rocket TCG set, featuring cards from the English Destined Rivals expansion and continuing through the Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Nintendo Switch re-releases that dropped on Pokémon Day earlier this year. Recent Pokémon releases have continued to revisit Team Rocket, helping build momentum for the villains’ first dedicated board game.

The Team Rocket project lands at a strategic time for the franchise, serving as a creative centerpiece for autumn during Pokémon's milestone 30th-anniversary year. With the next generation of open-world console RPGs, Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves officially locked for a late-2027 global launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo and Game Freak intentionally front-loaded 2026 with innovative spin-offs and tabletop experiences.

Gamers spent the spring exploring Pokémon Pokopia, which quickly became the highest-rated Pokémon game ever upon its March release, before jumping into cross-platform matches in April's Pokémon Champions. Tabletop collectors have enjoyed a similarly relentless schedule through the Ascended Heroes, Perfect Order, and Chaos Rising TCG sets, with a special 30th Celebration set arriving in September. When November arrives, the anniversary celebration will step away from screens entirely, handing the reins over to tabletop deception and Kanto's favorite troublemakers.
