PSBlackout Boycott Targets Sony's Physical Disc Plans
The PlayStation community raises broader concerns over Sony's direction.
Highlights
- #PSBlackout calls on PlayStation players to boycott Sony from Aug 23 to Aug 30 over its 2028 physical disc plans.
- Does It Play links Sony's disc decision to broader concerns over PlayStation's direction and legacy franchises.
- Many players question whether the week-long boycott will influence Sony's strategy.
PlayStation players are planning a week-long boycott of Sony over its decision to end physical game releases from January 2028. The campaign, called #PSBlackout, is led by the game preservation group ‘Does It Play.’
The group is asking players to stay off PlayStation consoles from Aug 23 to 30, 2026. Participants are also encouraged not to log into PlayStation Network (PSN) or purchase subscriptions, games, or other PlayStation products. The campaign follows earlier backlash, including PlayStation Plus subscription cancellations shared by players on Reddit.
The Campaign Links Disc Decision to Wider PlayStation Concerns
Does It Play says the issue goes beyond physical media. It argues that Sony Interactive Entertainment has grown increasingly disconnected from its community. The group pointed to the closure of Japan Studio, fewer fan events, PlayStation's live service push, limited support for PS VR2, and the absence of franchises such as SOCOM, Resistance, Sly Cooper, and Twisted Metal.
In its announcement, the group noted, "Sony wants to abandon fans? Let's give them a small taste of their own medicine!" It added that the blackout period was chosen to give "publishers and developers minimal impact while still giving players a voice."
Players Question Whether the Boycott will Change Sony's Plans
Not everyone expects the campaign to succeed. Many Reddit users argue that a one-week protest is unlikely to influence Sony.
Insider Gaming also questioned the campaign's impact. The publication noted that PSN has more than 120M users, meaning a temporary drop in activity would likely go unnoticed. It also pointed out that no major first-party PlayStation game launches during the boycott.
The report suggested that a protest timed to coincide with Marvel's Wolverine, which launches on Sep 15, 2026, could have carried more weight. However, convincing players to skip a major release would also be much harder.
Whether #PSBlackout changes Sony's strategy remains uncertain. Even so, the campaign has renewed debate around physical game ownership, preservation, and PlayStation's relationship with its community.
