Roblox Agrees to $12M Nevada Settlement on Child Safety
Roblox Nevada settlement enforces age verification, chat limits, and expanded parental controls.
Highlights
- Nevada forces Roblox to tighten youth safety measures in $12M settlement.
- The platform will group users by age and limit interactions between minors and adults.
- Parental controls will expand to users under 16, alongside funding for youth safety programs.
Roblox has agreed to a more than $12 million USD settlement with Nevada. The agreement introduces restricted communications, mandatory age verification, and expanded parental controls as scrutiny over child safety intensifies. Attorney General, Aaron Ford, announced the agreement on April 15, 2026, describing it as a first-of-its-kind framework for regulating online gaming platforms.
The settlement, reached in lieu of litigation, requires Roblox to implement stricter protections for minors while funding youth programs and enforcement support.
Nearly half of U.S. children under 16 use the platform, which reports over 111M daily active users (DAU). It also faces parallel lawsuits in states such as Kentucky, Texas, and Louisiana over alleged safety failures.
Roblox Nevada Settlement Introduces Age Verification and Chat Restrictions
Under the agreement, Roblox will require age verification for users engaging in chat features. It will deploy facial age estimation technology to group users into defined age brackets. Communication between adults and users under 16 will be restricted unless they are verified as trusted contacts added through QR codes or phone contacts.
Meanwhile, the platform will also monitor behavior to detect false age declarations.
Users will be segmented into age groups ranging from under 9 to over 21, limiting interactions to similar age ranges. While Roblox says the system can estimate age within one to two years for users between the ages of five and 25, it allows ID verification or parental consent to correct discrepancies.
Expanded Parental Controls and Youth Protections Under Nevada Agreement
Roblox will introduce dedicated accounts for users under 16, restricting access to adult-rated content and offering curated experiences. Parental oversight will extend to users under 16, expanding beyond the previous under-13 threshold. Likewise, nighttime notifications for minors will also be limited.
Financially, Roblox will allocate $10M over three years to youth-focused programs such as the Boys & Girls Club. It will fund a law enforcement liaison and an online safety campaign.
Attorney General Ford, stated, “This settlement will create a safer environment for our children online.” He added it could serve as a model for broader regulation.
In parallel, Roblox Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, said the agreement “builds on our work to establish a new standard for digital safety.”
The deal arrives amid wider regulatory pressure on tech platforms. Companies such as Google, Meta, YouTube, and Instagram are testing or implementing age verification systems. However, advocacy groups continue to question the effectiveness of these measures.
