Highlights

  • Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sues Roblox Corp., alleging the platform has become a “breeding ground” for predators.
  • Roblox denies the claims, calling them “sensationalized” and citing over 100 new safety features and stricter content policies.
  • Florida and Louisiana have filed similar lawsuits, increasing pressure on Roblox over child safety and online regulation.

Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, has filed a lawsuit against Roblox Corp., alleging that the online platform has become a “breeding ground” for predators. The lawsuit claims Roblox violated state and federal online safety laws by placing the interests of “pixel pedophiles and profits over the safety of Texas children,” and deceived parents by marketing the game as a safe space for creativity.

Paxton said in a statement released on X (formerly Twitter) that “we cannot allow platforms like Roblox to continue operating as digital playgrounds for predators where the well-being of our kids is sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed,” accusing Roblox of ignoring reports of sexual exploitation and exposing minors to inappropriate content while prioritizing growth and engagement.

Roblox denies allegations, highlights safety measures

Roblox Corp called the lawsuit based on “misrepresentations and sensationalized claims,” stating that it shares Paxton’s commitment to keeping children safe online.

The company said it has implemented more than 100 new safety features this year through its safety and civility group, including new moderation systems and content filters. Roblox also plans to adopt International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) standards, and has raised the minimum age for restricted content to 18.

During an Oct. 30 earnings call, Roblox CEO David Baszucki said safety remains a “top priority,” emphasizing that two-thirds of the company’s 151 million daily active users are aged 13 and older. He added Roblox runs “stricter than typical industry policies” and that safety improvements represent “an essential strategic investment” for the company, even if they create “short-term headwinds.”

The Texas case adds to a growing list of state actions against Roblox. Last month, the State of Florida launched a criminal investigation against the company.

Meanwhile, the state of Louisiana has filed similar lawsuits, accusing the platform of enabling “sexual exploitation” of minors, although Roblox has rejected both cases, calling them “false” and “erroneous.”

With more states investigating, the lawsuit could set a precedent for how online gaming platforms are regulated for child protection. It also raises broader questions about corporate accountability in digital spaces used by millions of minors worldwide.
