Why Sony Walked Away From Hideo Kojima’s Physint
Rising development costs and concerns over exclusivity reportedly shifted Sony’s position on the project.
Highlights
- Hideo Kojima’s next major project has taken an unexpected turn.
- A long-standing PlayStation partnership is coming to an end.
- Xbox is stepping in as Physint finds a new home.
Sony’s PlayStation has withdrawn funding from Hideo Kojima’s Physint after concerns about the project’s financial outlook and development progress, according to Bloomberg. The game was reportedly missing deadlines and heading well over budget despite being years away from release. Meanwhile, Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2 had not delivered the revenue PlayStation expected.
The decision also came down to the value Sony could receive from financing the project.
The report points out that PlayStation was unwilling to commit hundreds of millions of dollars to a game that would not remain permanently exclusive to its hardware. Both Death Stranding titles launched first on PlayStation before expanding to other platforms, with Kojima Productions retaining ownership of the franchises.
Why Sony No Longer Saw Physint as a Safe Investment
The change comes as Sony tightens its approach to game development following problems with its live-service strategy. Concord was pulled from sale shortly after launch, while the company has introduced stricter production milestones and canceled several games.
Physint was announced two years ago as Kojima’s return to the espionage-action genre he established with Metal Gear Solid. The game has not been publicly shown. Kojima stated that his studio “unexpectedly received notice” over the summer that PlayStation was ending its funding and spent three months looking for another partner.
The split is notable given Kojima’s long history with PlayStation.
Metal Gear Solid helped establish the original PlayStation as a leading gaming platform, and Kojima entered a long-term relationship with Sony after leaving Konami. The reported data also indicate that several PlayStation executives who had close relationships with Kojima have since departed.
Why Xbox Picked Up Kojima’s Project
Microsoft ultimately stepped in, with Xbox planning to publish Physint for Xbox and PC. The deal also covers film and television rights for Physint and Kojima Productions’ OD, fitting Xbox’s wider push into linear media.
For Sony, the decision removes a costly project with uncertain returns. For Xbox, it creates an opportunity to build on Kojima’s name across games and other forms of entertainment.
