Highlights

  • PHYSINT gets a new path forward after PlayStation exits the project.
  • Kojima Productions continues developing its cinematic action-espionage game.
  • The studio’s collaboration with Xbox expands beyond its existing projects.

Kojima Productions confirmed on Sept. 10 that PHYSINT remains in development after three months of searching for a new partner. Kojima reported that PlayStation unexpectedly informed the studio in mid-June 2026 that it would cancel the project, which he considers important to both himself and the studio.

Xbox will now publish the game.

Kojima Reveals More About PHYSINT’s Ambition and Cast

The project was originally revealed during PlayStation's 2024 State of Play, where PlayStation Studios chief, Hermen Hulst, presented it as a major collaboration with Kojima Productions. The announcement also tied PHYSINT to Sony Pictures through the appearance of a Columbia Pictures sign.

Kojima has described PHYSINT as an interactive experience with the production qualities of a movie and a new entry in the action-espionage genre. Development was still in its early stages in Sept. 2025, when Kojima was creating characters, concepts, and considering casting.

The game is intended to use technology beyond that of Death Stranding and OD.

The announced cast includes Don Lee, Charlee Fraser, and Minami Hamabe. Recent fan speculation has also linked Robert Pattinson to the project, although the supplied information does not confirm his involvement.

Kojima and Xbox Set a Wider Creative Partnership

The agreement strengthens an existing Xbox relationship built around OD, Kojima Productions' horror project, which is expected to release before PHYSINT. CEO of Xbox, Asha Sharma, stated that Kojima's willingness to challenge conventions aligns with the creativity Xbox wants to support. Kojima also confirmed that the partnership now extends beyond OD and will continue with PHYSINT.

The relationship will also cover film and television. Meanwhile, PlayStation reported that its three-decade relationship with Kojima and his independent studio remains strong despite leaving PHYSINT.

No release date or platforms have been announced for the game. Kojima previously suggested the game could still be five to six years away, meaning the latest agreement secures its development rather than bringing it closer to launch.
