Highlights

  • Sony Pictures has revived the long-standing Metal Gear Solid movie.
  • Former Bloodlines director duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein aim to deliver a visceral, cinematic experience.
  • The project aligns with Sony’s push into video game adaptations, leveraging renewed interest from Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

Sony Pictures has formally restarted its Metal Gear Solid film, attaching Final Destination: Bloodlines directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to helm the feature adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on April 9. The announcement comes with a first-look deal spanning all of Sony’s film labels, under which the duo will develop and produce projects through their newly established company, Wonderlab.

The Columbia Pictures adaptation, based on Hideo Kojima’s stealth-action franchise Metal Gear Solid, has faced multiple delays since its announcement in 2006. Earlier iterations involved director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and actor Oscar Isaac, but progress stalled amid shifting studio priorities and volatility in video game adaptations.

Avi Arad and Ari Arad are attached to produce the feature. The THR exclusive did not share a cast list. Isaac’s attachment was also not mentioned.

Directors Outline a Grounded, Immersive Take on Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid

Lipovsky and Stein's statement frames the project less as a studio assignment and more as a creative mandate. The duo called Metal Gear Solid "nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games," adding they are "thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima's iconic characters and unforgettable world to life."

Metal Gear Solid, the 1998 PlayStation title, is built with a layered narrative and morally complex characters, blending cold war espionage, military sci-fi, and psychological thriller across a single plotline. That genre-blend and sombre aesthetics closely align with the filmmaking identity Lipovsky and Stein have spent a decade building.

Their breakout indie, Freaks, a sci-fi thriller that sold at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), was praised precisely for its character interiority and genre subversion. They also described the Metal Gear Solid film as an opportunity to deliver a visceral and cinematic experience that remains faithful to Hideo Kojima’s vision.

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch acknowledged the duo, Lipovsky and Stein, as “masters of visuals and suspense” in the official statement, adding that the studio is “proud to have them as part of the Sony family.” Their 2025 release, Final Destination: Bloodlines, emerged as the franchise’s highest-grossing and best-reviewed entry, reinforcing confidence in their ability to handle major IPs such as Metal Gear Solid.

Metal Gear Solid Film’s Strategic Timing in a Competitive IP Market

The announcement fits a broader studio push to monetize gaming IP at scale. Sony's own Uncharted (2022) crossed $407 million USD globally. Recent hits, including A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, have proven the commercial scale of video game adaptations, which often outperforms traditional film releases at the global box office.

Konami has recently revisited its legacy IP with the remake of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Sony sealing the deal with two prominent directors reflects the studio’s aim to strategically align the production with the renewed hype around the remake and capitalize on it.

However, Sony is yet to confirm a release window or detailed plotline. Both Lipovsky and Stein are currently attached to an animated Venom movie and an original sci-fi project, The Earthling, for Columbia Pictures. With their packed schedule and studio not hinting at a release window, it could mean that the release of the Metal Gear Solid film is still far off.
