Roblox Hit ‘Jailbreak’ to get Animated Movie Adaptation

Roblox’s popular game Jailbreak is being turned into an animated movie titled Jailbreak: Rising City, produced by Wind Sun Sky Entertainment. The film marks the first-ever Roblox game adaptation, aiming to introduce the franchise to a wider audience and boost its long-term revenue.

As reported by Kidscreen, the movie will expand beyond Jailbreak’s familiar cops-and-robbers gameplay, exploring a new storyline within its sandbox universe. A promotional image features five 3D characters, including a robotic cowboy and a chipmunk-like sidekick, though no cast or release date has been announced yet.

‘Jailbreak: Rising City’ to launch Roblox’s first cinematic universe

Developed by Alex Balfanz and Keanu Jacobson under their studio Badimo, Jailbreak has become one of Roblox’s most played titles since launching in 2017. The game allows players to choose between criminals and police, carrying out heists or preventing them in a dynamic multiplayer world. It has recorded over 7.6B plays, underscoring its enduring popularity on the platform.

Wind Sun Sky Entertainment plans to turn the film into a larger multimedia franchise, with an animated series and short-form spin-offs also in development.

The project follows the success of other game-to-film transitions such as The Minecraft Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s, both of which proved that gaming IPs can perform well in theaters. Jailbreak: Rising City positions Roblox as the next major player in this trend, bridging its user-created content with mainstream entertainment.

If the film succeeds, it could pave the way for more Roblox titles to receive cinematic treatment, reinforcing Roblox’s shift from a gaming platform to a cross-media storytelling ecosystem.
