Rockstar Union Seeks Proper Recognition Before GTA VI

The Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU) has entered formal negotiations with Rockstar Games as it pushes for official recognition ahead of the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI). Backed by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB), the union held its first meeting with management in July 2026 after months of organizing and protests. It is seeking voluntary recognition but says it will pursue statutory recognition if talks fail.

The union described the meeting as "a step in the right direction." It stated that both sides agreed on "a roadmap for a speedy negotiation process." The next step is to establish a bargaining unit, which will determine the employees the union can formally represent.

Rockstar requested negotiations before deciding whether to grant voluntary recognition.

Rockstar Workers Seek Changes on Pay, Crunch and Layoffs

The union wants to negotiate overtime pay, an end to crunch, greater transparency around pay and bonuses, and the return of remote and flexible work. It is also seeking protections against AI-driven job displacement and a commitment to avoid layoffs. These demands follow Rockstar's return-to-office policy in 2024 and the dismissal of more than 30 employees across Canada, the U.K., and India in October 2025.

Those dismissals remain the subject of an employment tribunal that is due to begin in September 2026.

The IWGB alleges the company engaged in union busting. Rockstar disputes that claim and says the employees were dismissed for gross misconduct involving confidential information. The union also says it now has more members than ever before, allowing it to seek statutory recognition if voluntary talks do not succeed.

GTA VI Talks Could Influence the Wider Games Industry

The negotiations come as labor organizing gains momentum across the games industry. Around 45K jobs were reportedly lost between 2022 and mid-2025. A 2026 industry survey also found that 82% of U.S. game developers support unionization.

If recognized, the RGWU would become the U.K.'s second recognized video game union, following ZA/UM's Workers' Alliance. The outcome could shape how other studios approach collective bargaining in the years ahead.
