Sony Acquires Cinemersive Labs to Boost AI Game Rendering
Sony integrates Cinemersive Labs to enhance AI rendering and immersive PlayStation visuals.
Highlights
- Sony acquired Cinemersive Labs to strengthen its AI-driven rendering capabilities.
- The technology converts 2D images into volumetric visuals.
- The move aligns with PSSR and Project Amethyst.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has acquired UK-based Cinemersive Labs, a startup specializing in machine learning technology. The company focuses on converting 2D photos and videos into volumetric content. The Cinemersive team will join Sony’s Visual Computing Group, a research and engineering unit working on game rendering, video coding, generative AI models, and advanced graphical technologies.
Founded in 2022, Cinemersive Labs develops computer vision tools that reconstruct flat images into six-degrees-of-freedom environments. Its VR app Parallax converts smartphone and stereo-camera photos into volumetric scenes using AI trained on large datasets.
Sony said the team will contribute to “advancing state of the art visual computing within games.” The work includes enhancing visuals, improving rendering techniques, and unlocking higher fidelity through machine learning.
Acquisition Builds on Sony’s AI Rendering Roadmap
The Visual Computing Group (VCG) was created in 2024 through the merger of the iSIZE team and parts of the SIE Game Platform Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) group. It develops neural networks, video coding, generative models, and rendering solutions. Its projects span neural avatars, streaming integration, perceptual compression, and academic collaborations.
The Cinemersive acquisition complements Sony’s broader machine learning initiatives, including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PlayStation 5 Pro. It also aligns with Project Amethyst, a collaboration with AMD aimed at improving ray tracing and upscaling for future hardware.
This addition underscores Sony’s continued focus on immersive visuals and AI-assisted rendering across future PlayStation technologies.
