Sony is exploring a non-contact joystick system designed to maintain input accuracy after prolonged use. The technology could help address stick drift linked to wear in conventional controller mechanisms. However, Sony is yet to confirm its use in a future PlayStation (PS) or PS6 controller.
The patent, bearing publication number WO/2026/143037, is titled Operating Stick Assembly and Input Device. It was published on July 2, 2026, following an international filing on Dec 22, 2025. It claims priority from a Japanese filing dated Dec 23, 2024. Applicants include Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sony Global Manufacturing & Operations, Ryu Sannomiya, and Kenji Kawashima. Sannomiya and Kawashima are also listed as inventors.
The design uses non-contact sensors to detect joystick movement. The patent identifies magnetic sensors as an option, including tunnel magnetoresistance, or TMR, sensors. Its goal is to detect movement with "high precision even under prolonged use."
Sony Joystick Patent Focuses on Long-Term Precision
The mechanism uses engaging protrusions and grooves to restrict unwanted rotation around the stick's axis. Players can still tilt the joystick in different directions. Sony says limiting rotation prevents input force from being consumed by rotational movement, improving operability.
A spring mechanism returns the stick to its neutral position. A cylindrical biasing structure also stabilizes the assembly and helps maintain sensor positioning. The system supports downward press detection for inputs such as L3 and R3.
Cheat Happens highlighted the patent and linked it to potential next-generation PlayStation controllers. However, the filing does not mention PS6 or confirm a commercial implementation.

Sony and Microsoft continue using traditional potentiometer-based analog sticks in mainstream console controllers. Meanwhile, Hall effect and TMR alternatives have become more common in third-party products and replacement solutions. Sony has previously explored other controller concepts through patents, including modular designs and touchscreen-related ideas. Such filings do not guarantee commercial products.
Still, the latest patent shows Sony examining magnetic sensing as a potential approach to improving joystick durability and reducing wear-related input problems.
