Sony Santa Monica Reportedly Developing New God of War Franchise
The new God of War franchise signals the expansion of the PlayStation universe at Santa Monica Studio.
Highlights
- Reports indicate that Santa Monica Studio has begun work on a separate franchise expanding the God of War universe.
- The LinkedIn profile cites five years of shaping narrative and original lore for the project.
- Jason Schreier says it is “not a new IP,” but may feel like one.
Sony’s Santa Monica Studio is reportedly developing a new franchise set within the God of War universe. The information was disclosed through the LinkedIn profile of a former senior writer at Sony Interactive Entertainment. The listing indicates the writer spent five years contributing to a new project set in the franchise.
It states they helped “shape narrative vision and creative direction” for a title within the God of War universe. The role involved developing new characters, storylines, and original lore designed to expand the established IP.
The disclosure aligns with prior reporting by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier. He wrote that PlayStation had at one stage planned to support several God of War sequels and spin-offs. Schreier also likened the strategy to a smaller-scale shared universe model.
He later clarified on ResetEra that the upcoming project “is not a new IP, but it might feel like one.”
God of War Universe Expansion Strategy
Santa Monica Studio’s last major release was 2022’s God of War Ragnarök.
Cory Barlog, who directed 2018’s God of War and did not helm the sequel, is understood to be leading an unannounced project. Earlier speculation suggested he was working on a new science fiction IP, but Schreier publicly dismissed that claim as “nonsense.”
Separate reports indicate the new franchise may center on Faye, Kratos’ wife, though Sony has not confirmed character details, timeline, or release plans. However, Christopher Judge, who voices Kratos in the recent games, stated his next title will be announced this summer, fueling speculation about a reveal timeline.
Anniversary Initiatives and Remake Plans
The studio is currently marking the series’ 20th anniversary. It recently shadow-dropped a new 2D game following a State of Play presentation and confirmed that a God of War Trilogy remake is in early development.
In its update, the studio asked fans for “patience,” noting that it will be some time before further details can be shared.
If confirmed, the reported franchise would mark a structural expansion of the God of War universe beyond direct sequels. It would position the brand for broader long-term development within PlayStation’s portfolio.
