  • God of War: Sons of Sparta was shadow-dropped on PS5 during the Sony State of Play.
  • TC Carson returns as Kratos for both new projects revealed at the Sony State Of Play

Sony Interactive Entertainment electrified the gaming world during its February 12, 2026, State of Play broadcast with a massive double announcement for the God of War franchise. In a move that caters to both nostalgia and immediate gratification, the publisher officially confirmed that a full remake of the original God of War Trilogy is in development for modern hardware. To cap off the night, Sony also "shadow dropped" a brand new title, God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2D side-scrolling spin-off that is available to play immediately on the PlayStation 5. The headline reveal of the night was undoubtedly the long-awaited confirmation of the God of War Trilogy Remake

Santa Monica Studio announced that they are reimagining the classic Greek saga, which includes the 2005 original, God of War II (2007), and God of War III (2010). While the project is reportedly still in the very early stages of development and no gameplay footage or release dates were shared, the announcement teaser offered a thrilling detail for longtime fans. TC Carson, the original voice of the Spartan warrior, appeared to confirm the project and will return to reprise his iconic role as Kratos.

God of War: Sons of Sparta Shadow Drop and Gameplay Details

Developers cautioned that it will be some time before more details are shared, asking for patience as they work to bring Kratos’ Greek origins up to modern standards. While the remake is a promise for the future, players can jump into new content right now with God of War: Sons of Sparta. Developed as a collaboration between Santa Monica Studio and indie developer Mega Cat Studios, this new title is a retro-inspired action-platformer featuring pixel art animation.

Described as a "passion project," the game adapts the franchise's signature kinetic combat into a 2D plane. Players will control a young Kratos wielding a spear, shield, and divine "Gifts of Olympus" to battle classic foes and new enemies inspired by Greek mythology.

The narrative of Sons of Sparta offers a unique treat for lore enthusiasts, featuring a canon story written by the same team behind God of War and God of War Ragnarok. Set during Kratos' youth at the Spartan Agoge training camp, the plot focuses on his relationship with his brother, Deimos. The storytelling employs a unique structure where TC Carson voices the adult Kratos, serving as the narrator for the first time in over a decade.

This significant expansion arrives just as the franchise approaches its 20th anniversary in March 2026. God of War: Sons of Sparta is available now on the PlayStation Store, priced at $29.99 USD for the Standard Edition and $39.99 USD for the Digital Deluxe Edition.

With these announcements, Sony has effectively honored the series' roots while taking the universe in unexpected, indie-style directions, ensuring there is something for both veterans of the PS2 era and newer fans of the series to enjoy.
