Highlights

  • Windrose surpassed 1 million copies and 222,000 concurrent players within one week of its April 2026 launch.
  • The game merges naval combat with co-op survival crafting, earning "Very Positive" comparisons to Black Flag.
  • Kraken Express is addressing server issues with hotfixes while maintaining high player morale in Early Access.

It seems the high seas are calling to gamers far and wide. Windrose, the brand-new pirate-themed PvE survival adventure from developer Kraken Express and Pocketpair Publishing, has quickly become one of the biggest breakout hits. The game started selling like hotcakes, or rather, era-appropriate salt pork and bug-infested hardtack, the moment it launched in Early Access on April 14, 2026. In just six days across Steam and the Epic Games Store, the survival-crafter has "plundered" the massive milestone of one million copies sold, drawing in an audience of over 200,000 concurrent players in the process.

The staggering player engagement is backed up by SteamDB data, which recorded the game's all-time peak at exactly 222,134 concurrent players on April 19. This impressive surge pushed the title well past other major competitors in the survival genre, including Enshrouded and Dune: Awakening. This rapid rise builds directly on the game's strong early momentum, where it managed to sell 500,000 copies and hit nearly 100,000 concurrent players in its first 48 hours alone. All the while, it has maintained a "Very Positive" user rating on Steam, hovering between 87 and 89%. The game has reeled in a sizable audience, which is no easy feat in today's crowded market.

Developer Kraken Express quickly took to Steam to celebrate the rapid success and thank their community. In a touching official blog post, the studio wrote, "Ahoy, captains! We have just plundered another milestone – 1,000,000 copies, and 'we' means 'you' – a crew of fine, brave captains sailing the seas of Windrose." They expressed deep appreciation for the fans making their swashbuckling dream a reality, adding that the support is astonishing and players' patience with fixes is heart-warming, as reported by PC Gamer.

Blending Base Building with Naval Combat

They even admitted to shedding a "pirate-y tear of happiness" over the community's reviews, videos, and streams. A graphic heading up the post playfully noted that "the boar got a promotion," referencing a notoriously tough in-game enemy. The devs joked about the wildlife, stating, "Whatever does not send you flying into the nearest tree makes you stronger, right?"

For players who have not yet charted a course, Windrose offers a deep survival-crafting experience heavily steeped in the Age of Piracy. The game allows players to explore a massive open world solo or with up to eight friends in co-op mode. While the familiar loop of farming resources and poring over different ceiling tile shapes might seem like a weird fit for a game about roleplaying as a pirate, it seamlessly blends base building with robust naval combat and deep melee mechanics.

In fact, it's drawing highly favorable comparisons to Assassin's Creed: Black Flag—with plenty of players willing to jump into a solid facsimile of that game's ship-to-ship battles, with the notable exception of Skull and Bones. However, the launch voyage hasn't been entirely free of rough waves. The development team has acknowledged initial co-op server challenges and connectivity issues in some regions, and they even had to turn to the player base to ask for help getting the online multiplayer working properly.

Kraken Express is emphasizing community support as the key to their launch and is actively deploying hotfixes to enhance the experience. Considering how very few survival games arrive on storefronts fully formed, the promise of continued updates as they navigate through the Early Access period seems to be keeping the crew's morale incredibly high.
