Highlights

  • Ubisoft confirms the Ubisoft Black Flag remake, titled Resynced, is in development at Vantage Studios.
  • Series veteran Jean Guesdon will oversee the project, which aims for a late fiscal year launch.
  • The remake targets AC Shadows' level visuals and may entirely remove the modern-day Abstergo segments.

Ubisoft is plotting a massive new course for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Following a recent leadership shakeup that saw franchise veteran Jean Guesdon appointed as the new head of content at the publisher's new subsidiary, Vantage Studios, the company has finally confirmed the worst-kept secret in gaming: the Ubisoft Black Flag remake is real. Alongside this explosive reveal, Guesdon laid out a comprehensive and candid roadmap for the series' future, including his decision to personally direct the highly anticipated Codename Hexe. While sharing fresh details on upcoming multiplayer and mobile titles.

Validating years of relentless leaks, Ubisoft officially confirmed the return of fan-favorite pirate Edward Kenway with some concept art. The Ubisoft Black Flag remake, reportedly titled Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, is being steered by original game leaders now stationed at Vantage Studios. While playfully quoting the famous franchise mantra about nothing being true, Guesdon admitted in a blog post that the speculation surrounding this Caribbean return had "wind in their sails."

Rumors suggest the studio is targeting a release at the end of the coming financial year. It will feature massive visual and gameplay upgrades akin to last year's Assassin's Creed Shadows, while potentially dropping the polarizing modern-day segments entirely, as per VGC.

As the franchise looks to its future, it is also experiencing some significant creative shifts behind the scenes. Just last week, a VGC report revealed that the original director for Codename Hexe, Clint Hocking, had departed the project. Addressing the community directly, Guesdon announced he is stepping in to take over as creative director for the title, balancing it with his overarching content head duties.

Expanding the Assassin’s Creed Universe

Built by the veteran team at Ubisoft Montreal, Hexe promises a darker, uniquely narrative-driven experience set during a pivotal historical moment. Guesdon emphasized that the team is taking the necessary time to deliver on the game's ambitious vision, meaning they will enter a period of quiet development before unveiling more when the time is right.

Ubisoft is also pushing to expand the franchise into entirely new gameplay arenas with community feedback at the forefront. Codename Invictus, a multiplayer spin-off developed by a Montreal team of For Honor veterans, is progressing steadily through a "test and learn" approach. Guesdon firmly shut down recent internet rumors claiming the game would feature a stylized, cartoonish art direction, clarifying that it represents a fresh but fitting approach to Assassin's Creed multiplayer.

Meanwhile, the mobile-exclusive Codename Jade remains in active development. Set in ancient China, Guesdon confirmed the title will feature co-op gameplay, noting that the development team is utilizing valuable lessons learned from a recently pivoted early project to ensure a high-quality release.

These major announcements arrive as Ubisoft winds down its recent past to free up development resources for this robust new pipeline. Guesdon confirmed that last year’s Assassin's Creed: Shadows is officially moving into its final phase of post-launch support, meaning the development team is shifting focus, and players will only see smaller, less frequent updates going forward.

However, the publisher made sure to leave legacy fans with a fantastic surprise to soften the blow. Rounding out the massive news drop, Ubisoft has also rolled out a long-requested 60fps performance patch for 2014’s Assassin's Creed Unity, which is officially available today, March 5, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S players.
