  • ID@Xbox says Game Pass helps games reach more players and perform better across platforms.
  • Microsoft is reportedly reviewing Game Pass pricing after Microsoft Gaming CEO, Asha Sharma, called for a “better value equation.”
  • Rising costs linked to Call of Duty and slowing growth are prompting Xbox to rethink its subscription strategy.

Microsoft is positioning Xbox Game Pass as a launch accelerator that extends beyond its own ecosystem, according to ID@Xbox global director, Guy Richards. Speaking at the London Games Festival panel, Cracking the Discovery Code, Richards addressed how Game Pass impacts game launches.

“One of the great benefits of launching into Game Pass on day one is the discovery that comes with it,” Richards said, noting that access to millions of players at launch can “create a viral, snowball effect moment.” He added that this exposure typically extends beyond Xbox, with Game Pass launches often leading to stronger performance on other platforms. This includes increased Steam wishlist activity, which can translate into higher PC sales.

Richards also emphasized that Game Pass functions alongside, not against, traditional sales models.

However, Xbox supports these launches with additional marketing tied to the service, layered on top of standard campaign efforts. The company also negotiates financial terms individually with developers to ensure the model remains viable for each project.

Game Pass Discovery Impact Extends Beyond Xbox Ecosystem

The discussion comes as Microsoft continues to reassess the service’s value proposition.

Microsoft is reportedly reviewing Xbox Game Pass after internal concerns over pricing. In a memo, Microsoft Gaming CEO, Asha Sharma, said the service needs “a better value equation,” despite remaining central to Xbox’s strategy.

The review reflects efforts to balance Game Pass’s role as a discovery platform with long-term sustainability. The service reported 34M subscribers in February 2024 and generated nearly $5 billion USD in FY2025, even as growth slowed to 36% between 2022 and 2024. Microsoft is assessing pricing, tier flexibility, and content strategy as it adjusts to rising costs and evolving platform demands.

The panel highlighted discovery as a central challenge for modern game launches. It focused on how platforms like Game Pass can extend reach without displacing traditional distribution channels.

As Xbox refines its subscription strategy, the company is balancing pricing, scale, and developer incentives. Richards’ remarks suggest Game Pass remains a major lever in that approach, particularly for improving launch visibility across the wider market.
