Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Ahmedabad’s transformation into a thriving hub for tourism, heritage, and the concert economy, saying the city is now recognized globally for its ability to host world-class events. Addressing a roadshow in Ahmedabad, the Prime Minister recalled that the city had recently drawn international attention with a mega concert that brought in record footfalls.
Concert Economy Shaping Ahmedabad’s Identity
During his visit, PM Modi promised an INR 5,400 crore investment towards Ahmedabad’s infrastructure as a tourism and concert-focused state. He stressed that Gujarat continues to provide immense momentum to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaign, attributing the state’s growth to two decades of sustained reforms and development focus.
Highlighting the growing role of cultural tourism in driving economic activity, PM Modi said, “Ahmedabad has become a significant centre for the concert economy. The Coldplay concert that happened here a few months ago was discussed all over the world. Ahmedabad’s stadium, with a seating capacity of one lakh is also a centre of attraction for everyone. This shows that Ahmedabad can host big concerts and is ready for big sports events.”
On January 25–26, Ahmedabad drew global attention by hosting a record-breaking concert that captivated over 250,000 people over two days. After the concert, Coldplay had revealed that its India tour saw over 134,000 attendees in a single night. The band said that the Ahmedabad crowd broke the record for attendance at a Coldplay concert. The world record for paying spectators is currently held by Vasco Rossi who had over 225,000 attendees at Modena Park in 2017 while the record for the most spectators in history is held by Rod Stewart, with over 3.5 million attendees in Rio de Janeiro.
While the event made headlines for its scale, the Prime Minister emphasized that its success reflects Ahmedabad’s rising stature as a concert economy hub and a showcase of India’s organizational capabilities. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had also lauded the milestone, calling it a “global benchmark” that demonstrated India’s readiness to host world-class events.
PM Modi concluded by reaffirming that Ahmedabad’s growth story is not only about infrastructure and industry but also about cultural identity and global recognition. By combining heritage pride with modern attractions, Ahmedabad is positioning itself as a magnet for tourism, culture, and global events, strengthening India’s image as a rising hub of innovation and opportunity.
