  • The Timeless, Timely: MU:DS, K-Culture Unboxed exhibition in Los Angeles reimagines ancient Korean artifacts as contemporary fashion and lifestyle items.
  • South Korea is blending heritage and global brand partnerships to grow its cultural soft power worldwide.
  • K-pop groups like BTS converted Korean heritage into global merch culture via relic-inspired products and designs.

When BTS released ARIRANG, the merch which fans tried their best to collect was not a standard tour t-shirt but rather hairpins, clips, and various other items etched with Korean heritage. The strategic combination of ancient relic and mass fandom, the Sacred Bell of Great King Seongdeok meets a Billboard 200 chart-topper, depicts a marked shift in how South Korea is quietly spreading its civilizational DNA through K-pop tours, K-heritage exhibitions and so much more. And one such K-heritage event has arrived in Los Angeles, ahead of BTS: The City activation.

K-Heritage Reimagined For Modern Life

Titled Timeless, Timely: MU:DS, K-Culture Unboxed, the exhibition opened on May 7, 2026, at the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (KCCLA). The event is set to run for a month, ending on July 7, 2026, the showcase of something that KCCLA Director Haedon Lee calls “industrialization of K-culture.” This is not just a display for heritage items but rather a curation of a living design language. The Baekje Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner and Joseon-era moon jars on display may act as templates for items like phone cases, handbags, and high-fashion streetwear.

According to the Columbia Dispatch, KCCLA Director Haedon Lee said, “This exhibition demonstrates how Korea’s cultural heritage can be reinterpreted through contemporary sensibilities and design to become part of everyday life. It also provides an opportunity to introduce the potential of K-lifestyle content based on traditional cultural products to local audiences.”

How BTS Turned Ancient Relics Into Global Merch Culture

The Timeless, Timely: MU:DS, K-Culture Unboxed will begin with a “Prologue” media wall and will then move into the “Objects for Everyday Wonder” section, where celadon and mother-of-pearl are reinterpreted for modern life. Post that, the “Beyond the Museum Shop” section will highlight MU:DS collaborations with global titans like Starbucks, CASETiFY, and BTS.

The 2026 BTS x MU:DS collection drew inspiration mostly from the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok, an 18.9-ton Silla-era masterpiece created in 771 CE. Its haunting “beating” acoustic sound is actually featured on the BTS track “No. 29”. This BTS collab comes after the success of the 2024 Dalmajung series, which knitted the lyrics from Yet to Come and Mikrokosmos into designs featuring the Pensive Bodhisattva.

The exhibition will also feature the royal section of “Power and Prestige” of the Irworobongdo and “Beauty of Stillness,” which is a hanok-inspired space. The event will conclude with the “Source Objects,” showcasing the direct connection between the ancient metalwork and the K-heritage inspired K-pop merch
