How HYBE's BTS Fueled Local Economies in the US
By expanding its concert branding across urban frameworks, the K-pop giant pulled in $340 million USD in local spend per residency.
Highlights
- HYBE's "The City" program transformed usual stadium residencies into regional festivals, integrating host city retail, hospitality, and public attractions.
- Subsidiary fan spending on lodging, dining, and transit during BTS tour stops rivals the domestic economic impact of the FIFA World Cup.
- Aligning live performances and multi-category IP made HYBE one of South Korea’s top-grossing entertainment agencies.
HYBE’s live entertainment strategy has converted traditional concert touring into a multi-industry economic engine, which is driving hundreds of millions of dollars into host cities. By expanding their top acts’ residencies into city-wide commercial activations, the company is capturing economic windfall not only on the primary dates but the days around it as well. This is where events like BTS’ "ARIRANG - The City" come in, turning the septet’s multi-day tour stops into major regional economic events.
HYBE Expands Tours Beyond the Arena with BTS
Under "The City" initiative, HYBE aligns itself with municipal authorities and local businesses to integrate its music and artist intellectual property directly into the stops’ urban infrastructures.
For instance, at BTS' four-night run in Las Vegas, US, the company set up large photo exhibitions and pop-up retail hubs across the city, coordinated the Bellagio fountains to the group's music, and collaborated with local restaurants to offer specialized menus featuring traditional K-food such as tteokbokki, gimbap, and samgyeopsal, thus expanding its reach.
Yoon Bora, visual arts officer at the Korean Cultural Center in New York, noted that the music acts as a "gateway that allows people to discover not only the Korean language but also Korean culture in general, including beauty, food, technology, and tourism."
A similar pattern surfaced during a two-day engagement at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. According to Billboard Korea, BTS concerts in the area brought in over 110,000 official attendees, producing sustained commercial traffic for nearby hospitality districts, including nearby Manhattan's Koreatown. However, SBS notes the attendance numbers to hit 150,000, which is higher than the Billboard-stated figure.
Quantifying the Municipal Return
The concentration of fan activity delivered measurable financial support to local hospitality, transportation, and retail sectors. As reported by Billboard Korea, the multi-day activation of "ARIRANG - The City in Las Vegas" created an estimated $340 million USD in regional economic impact, while also creating a commercial entry point for exported South Korean consumer sectors.
According to The Guardian, Michael Mariano, head of economic development at Tourism Economics, said, “Even if we look only at the linked spending—such as accommodation, food and beverage, and air travel—outside of tickets, which is the average spending of BTS fans, the impact would be comparable to or greater than that of the FIFA World Cup.” Notably, Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics company providing economic forecasting, impact analysis, and marketing attribution.
HYBE Grows Artist IP in Broader Ways
This multi-channel model by HYBE enhances the commercial value of its artist intellectual property (IP) and persistently drives massive corporate earnings. A prime example of the same occurred in 2023, when the synergy between the company’s live tours sector and ancillary IP businesses helped HYBE to achieve a record second-quarter revenue of approximately ₩621 billion (~$477M at that time). The company went on to produce ₩2.18 trillion (~ $1.67B then) for the full year, becoming the first South Korean entertainment agency to cross the ₩2T (~ $1.5B) annual revenue milestone.
