The upcoming live-action adaptation of the webtoon High School Queen has unveiled its lead cast on July 3. Studio Dragon confirmed that Kim Se-jeong, Bae Hyun-sung, and Jo Han-gyeol will lead the fantasy romance K-Drama.
The upcoming K-Drama adapts critie and Nehae’s High School Queen webtoon that has been running on Naver and WEBTOON since 2024 and has built a readership through its blend of action, fantasy, and coming-of-age themes. The series is set to stream on TVING in 2027.
High School Queen webtoon follows Cheongha Kim, a Joseon-era queen and swordswoman who dies amid palace intrigue and is reincarnated 400 years later as Dajin Kim, a bullied high school student. She uses royal composure and combat skills to confront her tormentors and the power structures protecting them.
Cast and Production of High School Queen Live-Action Adaptation
As the protagonist, Kim Se-jeong takes the dual role of Cheongha and Dajin. According to allkpop’s reporting, Kim said the role draws on qualities she has explored across her acting career and that she is approaching the High School Queen production with both excitement and a sense of responsibility.
Bae Hyun-sung plays dual roles as well. He plays the role of Cheongha’s loyal Joseon-era royal guard Won-joo Seong, while also taking on the role of Si Woo Seong, a present-day aloof kendo star.
Rounding out the lead cast, Jo Han-gyeol takes on the dual roles of King Nyeong Lee and transfer student Doyoon Lee. The actor expressed his excitement over joining the K-Drama and said he is eager to start filming.
Veteran director Yoon Sung-sik, known for Mr. Queen, The Haunted Palace, and Bridal Mask, is helming the adaptation. The script is overseen by writer Lee Jung-tae. Studio Dragon is yet to confirm the total episode count or an exact premiere date.
The production studio aims to expand the High School Queen IP globally with diverse content. YNA reported that the studio has stated they will show the beauty and charm of Korean culture through the upcoming K-Drama.
Following its premiere, High School Queen will join a vast lineup of webtoon-to-drama pipeline, which includes recent titles like A Shop for Killers, The Remarried Empress, and Agent Kim Reactivated. With production now moving forward and its lead cast confirmed, High School Queen enters the next phase toward its 2027 debut.
