KPop Demon Hunters Sequel Confirmed as Netflix Expands Franchise
Netflix has closed new multiyear partnerships with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans for developing the upcoming KPop Demon Hunters sequel.
Highlights
- Netflix has confirmed the KPop Demon Hunters sequel with the returning core creative team.
- Both Kang and Appelhans have expressed interest in expanding the worldbuilding of the first film in the upcoming sequel.
- While KPop Demon Hunters 2 was previously linked to a 2029 release window, the timeline may shift.
The KPop Demon Hunters sequel is officially moving forward at Netflix, with the streamer closing deals with original directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. Both of them will return as writers and directors of the follow-up film, under a new multiyear partnership between the filmmakers and Netflix.
The confirmation follows the streaming success of the animated musical fantasy KPop Demon Hunters, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released on Netflix. The first film became the platform’s most-watched animated movie ever, surpassing 500M views globally.
The director, Kang, framed the Netflix KPop Demon Hunters sequel as an expansion of a culturally rooted story. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang said, while stating that they aim to expand the worldbuilding of the original movie.
Appelhans echoed that sentiment, adding that the creative team is eager to “write their next chapter” and continue the blend of music, animation, and narrative that defined the original film. Netflix CCO Bela Bajaria noted the significance of Kang and Appelhans’ efforts, stating that KPop Demon Hunters “ignited a global fandom that crossed languages.”
KPop Demon Hunters Sequel May Slip Beyond 2029 Release Window
The Hollywood Reporter has pointed out that the tentative release window may shift from the reported 2029 date to later, due to the scale of the project. Reporting suggests that Kang and Applehans are in the early developmental stage and will accelerate production after the awards season.
Beyond the returning creative team, nothing much about the sequel is known, including the narrative direction and association of any new characters. Netflix has also yet to confirm the voice cast or full creative team.
Considering the global success of the current cast and singers associated with the KPop Demon Hunters movie, the sequel may retain the original members. The first movie left some unresolved plot threads, including the fate of certain characters and the expanding mythology around the demon-hunting K-pop trio, which might provide a narrative runway for the follow-up.
Netflix film chairman Dan Lin emphasized that “there’s so much more story to tell” about the girl group Huntrix. He positioned the sequel as an ambitious project after the first KPop Demon Hunters movie crossed cultural barriers and gained worldwide success.
Looking ahead, Sony Pictures Animation leadership Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville have emphasized that the studio aims to support the creative vision of Kang and Appelhans that provided the first movie a distinct identity.
The announcement arrived amidst KPop Demon Hunters’ Oscars buzz. After winning multiple international awards, the movie is currently competing in Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song categories at Academy Awards 2026, creating a significant cultural moment for Korean-inspired productions.
