Highlights

  • KPop Demon Hunters surpassed 500M Netflix views and dominates streaming metrics, becoming one of the most-watched films globally.
  • The movie's blend of K-pop, Korean folklore, and musical storytelling expands the global reach of American animation.
  • Critical acclaim, major awards, and strong commercial performance position the film as one of the best American animated films.

Few animated films in recent years have moved from a streaming debut to becoming a cultural institution like KPop Demon Hunters. The Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) feature, released on Netflix on June 20, 2025, has spent nearly a year generating records and winning prestigious awards.

KPop Demon Hunters had received more than 500M views on Netflix. Nielsen reported it accounted for 20.5B minutes of watch time in 2025, ranking as the most-streamed film of the year.

KPop Demon Hunters won the Oscar for Best Animated Picture and Best Original Song for Golden at the 98th Academy Awards. The title track also won Best Song Written for Visual Media at the Grammys 2026.

Director Maggie Kang became the first person of Korean descent to win in the Best Animated Feature category, while Golden became a K-pop breakthrough at the global stage. The movie has become a case study in how globalized storytelling and musical narratives can expand the reach of animated films beyond traditional markets.

KPop Demon Hunters’ Success: From Streaming Record to Cultural Landmark

American animation has been predominant with Western culture-specific narrative, instead of global storytelling. However, in KPop Demon Hunters, Kang and Chris Appelhans brought South Korean folklore, traditional imprint, and K-pop-led story, which attracted a global fandom combining anime, music, and K-pop enthusiasts.

A CBR report published nearly a year after release argues the film remains the greatest American animated film ever made, citing its narrative construction, cultural significance, and sustained cultural impact. KPop Demon Hunters introduced K-pop and Korean culture to a new audience demographic, which increased tourism in South Korea. It also became the most-watched animated movie or any movie in Netflix history.

Renowned film critic Brian Tallerico described KPop Demon Hunters as “emotionally empowering in ways that have made it a cross-demo hit,” while discussing the cultural narrative of the movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 91% Certified Fresh score from critics and a 99% Verified Hot audience score.

The movie’s commercial performance is also significant; despite being a streaming-first release, KPop Demon Hunters generated over $24.5M in box-office revenue. The movie also produced a wave of licensed products, from costumes and toys to noodle cup recreations, and most recently, a McDonald's Happy Meal promotion. Netflix has also confirmed a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters.

Whether KPop Demon Hunters is the greatest American animated film ever remains a matter of critical debate; however, the movie’s cultural significance has broken many barriers and records across global markets. Nonetheless, in the wake of the Japanese anime industry, KPop Demon Hunters has made an argument that the American animated film is not a diminishing genre; it needs cross-cultural appeal to resonate with global audiences.
