A new anime series from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise is officially in production, with original creator Hideko Anno’s Studio Khara producing the new series with CloverWorks. Disclosed at the end of the 'Evangelion:30+ 30th Anniversary of Evangelion' event on Feb 23, 2026, the announcement marked a shift for one of Japan’s most influential anime IPs, under a new creative direction.
The new project will be penned by game creator Yoko Taro, best known for NieR: Automata. However, a specific plotline and the name of the project has not been revealed yet.
On Feb 24, Studio Khara released the teaser video from the new Evangelion series announcement. The teaser showcased similar dark and post-apocalyptic aesthetics, dilapidated civilization, and Evas, from previous installments of the franchise.
New Evangelion Series Production Team Signals Creative Shift
As mentioned, Yoko Taro will handle series composition and screenplay. The directors attached include Kazuya Tsurumaki, who helmed entries in the Rebuild film series and Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
Another director, Toko Yatabe, has also worked with original creator Anno in Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time and Rebuild, bringing long-time experience to the franchise. Keiichi Okabe, who is also attached to the NieR franchise, will handle the music composition.
Taro is known for existential storytelling and is the spearhead behind the unconventional narrative structures in the NieR franchise. The teaser also had “This is our paradise/ This is our graveyard,” written, positioning the upcoming series to have similar existential themes that echo the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series (1995-1996).
However, key details remain undisclosed, including the release window, streaming details, and voice cast attached to the project. Since the project will bring new creative direction to the Evangelion franchise, the anticipation of introducing new characters and timelines remains open until the official announcement.
