Netflix's 'One Piece' Return Sparks Free Manga Offer

Viz Media is offering free access to 155 chapters of the One Piece manga through April 10, timed to Netflix's second season premiere on March 10.

The promotion makes roughly one-tenth of Eiichiro Oda's manga available through the Shonen Jump app in 10 countries, including the U.S., U.K., and India. The chapters cover the East Blue and early Grand Line storylines adapted in Netflix's first two seasons, ending before the Alabasta Arc planned for season three.

The One Piece manga free release includes chapters 1 through 155, spanning Luffy's journey from his hometown in the East Blue through the crew's arrival at Alabasta Kingdom. The selection ends before the Baroque Works confrontation, avoiding spoilers for the live-action show's third season.

One Piece, which has sold over 516M copies worldwide, often deters new readers with its 1,150-plus chapter catalog. The Netflix adaptation has helped address this entry barrier since its August 2023 debut, when it became the platform's most-watched series in 93 countries during its first week.

The live-action show condenses Oda's story, while taking creative liberties with pacing and plot details. Season two introduces elements from the Grand Line arc, including the Drum Island and Alabasta storylines, featuring expanded character rosters and more elaborate set pieces than the first season.

Outside the 10 countries with Shonen Jump access, readers can use Manga Plus, which offers free one-time reads of select chapters. The One Piece limited-time release gives new fans roughly a month to catch up before the offer expires.

The Netflix series returns with eight episodes on March 10. Production has already begun on season three, though no release date has been announced.
