Bandai Spirits is rolling out a series of collectible figures merging the world of anime with professional basketball, launching a One Piece-NBA collaboration that reimagines the franchise's protagonist Monkey D. Luffy as a basketball player.
The ONE PIECE x NBA MASTER STARS THE MONKEY. D.LUFFY figure line debuts December 5 at Tokyo's One Piece Base Shop in Shinjuku. Standing approximately 17 centimeters tall, the figures feature Luffy wearing jerseys from six NBA teams: the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies. Each variant carries a retail price of 9,900 yen, equivalent to roughly $65.
The partnership represents Bandai's strategy to capitalize on the convergence of anime and sports fandom. The company describes the collaboration as uniting One Piece's themes of dream-driven pursuit with the NBA's competitive intensity and team dynamics.
Why Bandai Is Betting Big on One Piece–NBA Deal?
According to Bandai Spirits, the initial figure release marks the beginning of a broader merchandise rollout. Bandai plans to introduce Tony Tony Chopper plushies in NBA jerseys by March 2026, alongside a fully articulated S.H. Figuarts Luffy figure with an undisclosed release date. A smaller Uniform Icon Edition featuring uniforms from 10 NBA teams is scheduled for 2026, with additional lifestyle products including apparel in development.
Distribution extends across select Asian markets starting December 11 through Premium Bandai's online platform in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. Select NBA Official Stores in these regions will stock the products, though no U.S. distribution has been announced.
The collaboration arrives as One Piece maintains momentum across multiple entertainment channels. The franchise has sold 500 million manga copies worldwide and continues expanding through streaming platforms and a Netflix live-action adaptation. Recent merchandise initiatives include a fourth Swiss watch collection and board game releases.
The NBA's presence across more than 200 countries positions the league as a strategic partner for anime franchises seeking international reach. Whether the collaboration becomes a collector's item or catalyzes broader lifestyle trends depends on sustained market engagement and potential expansion into the U.S. market.
