  • OpenAI will provide ChatGPT Go free for one year to new and existing users.
  • India is a major growth market for OpenAI, but growing paid subscriptions has been a challenge.
  • ChatGPT's competitors also have their own free AI plans to attract Indian users.

OpenAI's ChatGPT Go subscribers can now use it for free for one year in India as part of its promotional offer. The free window slated to begin from November 4, 2025, signals the rise of the company’s paid services within India's rapidly growing AI market. The offer also applies to new users signing up during the limited-time period.

ChatGPT Go was launched in India in August at the price of about ₹399 per month (roughly $4.50 USD). The service offered a higher usage capacity than the free version, where one can get faster and better response generation, image creation, and file uploading. It also provides an enhanced memory for improved personalized replies.

The offer follows OpenAI's increased push in India, with the company announcing plans to open its first office in New Delhi this year. When announced in August of 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman talked about the future of the company in India and added, "Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.”

With the local team, OpenAI intends to support developers and enterprises. The company is all set to host a DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru on November 4, during which further India-specific developments could possibly be revealed.

ChatGPT to Compete with Google Gemini and Perplexity

Even though India is the second-largest market after the U.S., monetization still remains a challenge. The ChatGPT App has recorded more than 29 million in the 90 days preceding August. However, in-app purchases in India were about $3.6 million in that period, according to an Appfigures report.

OpenAI's offer comes amidst similar other initiatives like Perplexity, which has partnered with Bharti Airtel to provide Perplexity Pro to Airtel customers. Not only that, but Google's AI Pro plan which enables you to use Gemini's most powerful features, has also been offering free access to students for a year as well. This confirms the growing competition in the Indian AI space to capture users for a long period of time.

In a statement, Nick Turley, the vice president and head of ChatGPT, said that the "adoption and creativity" of Indian users ever since its launch "has been inspiring," and that they are excited to see how and what the users will "build, learn and achieve with these tools."
