South Korea is actively trying to become one of the most popular travel destinations, capitalizing on its K-content-driven explosive tourism market. The Korea Times reports that the country’s tourism authority, the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), has appointed popular actor Priyanka Mohan, who is of Indian origin, as the honorary ambassador for Korean tourism.
Netflix Success Makes Priyanka Mohan a Tourism Bridge
Mohan, who debuted in 2019 and built a robust career primarily in the South Indian film industry, then vaulted into global prominence this March owing to her lead role in the Netflix original Made in Korea. The film dominated India’s movie charts at number one for two consecutive weeks and became a major hit across seven countries, including some parts of the Middle East.
The KTO’s strategy potentially leans on Mohan’s digital reach of nearly 6 million Instagram followers, a platform which she often uses to share her affinity for K-culture. Speaking regarding the appointment on her Instagram account, Mohan noted the role was “truly very special.” She expressed gratitude to the Korean government and the KTO, who acknowledged her as a fitting person to bridge the audiences of the two very different countries. She also highlighted the fact that South Korea’s “culture, traditions, and warmth” have “always inspired” her.
From Seoul to Gyeongju, A Curated Korea Experience for the Made in Korea Star
Post her appointment, Priyanka Mohan will reportedly take part in a structured weeklong experiential tour. Her itinerary will include visiting the Seoul Forest and Tongin Market. She will also participate in K-food cooking classes and undergo personal color analysis, while also experiencing wellness spa treatments. Mohan is also invited to a traditional 12-stringed gayageum zither concert at Solhyangjae Culture House in Eunpyeong Hanok Village, after which she will travel to the historic city of Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province to visit the Gyeongju Expo Solgeo Art Museum and Wooyang Art Museum.
Seoul Bets on India's Outbound Travel Boom?
This targeted marketing push comes after President Lee Jae Myung’s crucial April state visit to India, which KTO President Park Sung-hyeuck noted as “a new momentum for bilateral exchange” that is required to convert Mohan's massive popularity into actual visits.
The economic stakes for South Korea, with regards to India, are high. According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's 2026 Overseas Hallyu Survey, the country ranks second among 30 surveyed nations that favor Korean culture at 83.8%. With India's Ministry of Tourism recording 32.71M nationals making foreign trips last year, and the World Travel & Tourism Council forecasting that the market will be the world's fastest-growing with a long-term annual growth rate surpassing 11%, Seoul's cultural diplomacy is a strategic move for an evergreen, vital macroeconomic engine.
