The Red River adaptation will feature a voice cast led by Mirai Tachibana, known for playing Kotono in Idoly Pride. Tachibana will voice the protagonist, Yuri, with Wataru Kato taking the role of Prince Kail. Hiroki Nanami is joining the voice cast as Satoshi Himuro, who will also take on the role of the narrator.

Along with the castlist, the Red River production committee also announced that Yoshihisa Hirano will compose the music. Red River Revives a Historical Women-centric Narrative

The series adapts Red River (Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori), a historical fantasy manga created by Chie Shinohara. Originally serialized in Shogakukan’s Shōjo Comic magazine between 1995 and 2002, the manga has become one of the publisher’s most recognized shojo titles.

Previously, the author expressed his excitement for the adaptation initiative. Red River anime adaptation reflects a renewed interest in classic shojo intellectual properties.

Most successful modern anime are Shonen and Isekai titles, which lean heavily on male protagonists. However, after the sustained rise of Apothecary Diaries, women-centric historical narratives gained popularity. The series was also nominated in multiple categories for Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2025.

The manga follows high school student Yuri Suzuki, who is transported from modern Japan to the 14th-century BC Hittite Empire. The narrative gained popularity during serialization due to its blend of political intrigue, romance, and historical fantasy elements.
