Sword Art Online Returns in 2028 With New Film Integral Domain

The Sword Art Online franchise is returning to theaters with a brand-new original anime feature, Sword Art Online the Movie: Integral Domain. The official X post confirmed a 2028 release on July 6, along with production updates including a trailer and teaser visual.

Integral Domain marks the series’ first theatrical film since the Progressive duology, which was released across 2021-22. The upcoming movie will pick up after the Alicization arc plotline, which ended its TV run in 2020.

It will not follow an existing light novel arc, but a new concept and story from Sword Art Online (SAO) franchise creator Reki Kawahara. The project was first teased at the FullDive event in 2022, and then in 2024, with the production details coming after almost four years of waiting.

What We Know So Far About the Sword Art Online Integral Domain Movie

The latest Sword Art Online the Movie: Integral Domain announcement came with key creative staff and voice cast confirmation. Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu return as the voices for franchise protagonists Kirito and Asuna, respectively.

Shingo Adachi, previously the character designer and chief animation director for the SAO TV anime, is directing  Integral Domain. Franchise veteran Yumiko Yamamoto returns as character designer for the movie.

Long-time animation studio A-1 Pictures will produce the animation again, alongside its new internal label, Psyde Kick Studio. The teaser and release material did not delve deeper into the plotline.

Unlike Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night and Scherzo of Deep Night, which revisited the Aincrad arc from Asuna’s perspective, Integral Domain is not positioned as a spin-off but as a mainline theatrical feature. Prior films in the franchise include the 2014 compilation Extra Edition and 2017’s Ordinal Scale.

The new movie also arrives as Sword Art Online broadens its multimedia strategy. Bandai Namco is launching the action RPG Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad on July 10 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, bringing fans back into the original death game environment. The SAO franchise has sold more than 30M light novels across the globe by 2022, and expanded to over 20 video games spanning PC, consoles, and mobile, since 2013. The game series also surpassed 10M copies sold globally as of March 2026.
