Bandai Namco Entertainment and A24 confirmed an upcoming Elden Ring live-action film adaptation on May 23, 2025, with writer and director Alex Garland. The live-action announcement coincides with the release window of Elden Ring Nightreign, which launched on May 30, 2025.
The Elden Ring action RPG, published by FromSoftware, is notable for its “authentic dark fantasy world.” Prominent fantasy writer George R.R. Martin, known for the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise, co-wrote Elden Ring’s narrative with FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki.
Martin is also attached to the project as a producer, along with Peter Rice, Vince Gerardis, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich. Martin has expressed his enthusiasm about the adaptation, stating that Garland is a "first-rate director."
The adaptation was largely driven by Alex Garland himself. He approached FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment with a detailed pitch that included a 160-page script and an additional 40 pages of visual material. This is an unusually hands-on move for a filmmaker, whose work credits include Ex Machina, 28 Days Later, and Annihilation.
What Might the Film's Plot Cover?
According to the film's IMDb listing, the story draws directly from the game's core mythology. It will begin with the shattering of the Elden Ring’s once-eternal golden light, an event that ultimately triggers a devastating war.
While the framing suggests the film will adapt the lore's pre-game history rather than following a player surrogate through the main game narrative, both A24 and Garland have been tight-lipped about the movie’s plot. Bandai Namco’s press release did not outline specific plot details, focusing instead on the narrative background of Elden Ring and Elden Ring Nightreign, raising speculations that the narratives can overlap in the movie.
However, Polygon notes that multiple rumors point towards the movie’s narrative following a Tarnished knight, Vyke, who aimed to become the Elden Lord. The game’s box art featuring Vyke is one of the reasons for fan speculation.
Being an RPG, Elden Ring has a player-driven narrative. Translating player-driven narrative into a fixed screenplay will require structural reinterpretation, a challenge that has affected past adaptations of similar open-ended games.
A24 is yet to announce an official cast list. However, as per media reports, Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, and Cailee Spaeny have been attached as cast for the Elden Ring live-action movie.
Production Timeline and Elden Ring Live-Action Probable Release Date
According to Jordan Ruimy’s report on World of Reel, the Elden Ring live-action movie has started active production in Scotland. Bandai Namco CEO Nao Udagawa previously confirmed, in 2025, that development was progressing steadily. “We have A24 helming up the project with Alex Garland and Peter Rice— a lot of very well-known names and heavy hitters in the film industry,” he added.
However, an official announcement about the upcoming Elden Ring movie’s development is still due from A24 as of early April. Reports also indicate that A24 is planning for a 2027 release date, hinting that the movie might be in an early development stage.
