Highlights

  • Apple may be exploring a new gaming hardware category for iPhone through Beats.
  • The project has reportedly been in development for more than a year.
  • The move is drawing questions about Apple’s approach to the existing controller market.

Apple has reportedly been developing two gaming controllers for iPhone for more than a year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The accessories are expected to launch under Beats, with haptic feedback and two models planned to compete with third-party controllers.

The project follows MacRumors finding references to two first-party game controllers in macOS 26.7 code. Although the references appeared in macOS, Gurman says the hardware is intended for iPhone.

Beats executives are reportedly leading the products’ engineering and conception.

Why is Apple Using Beats for Gaming?

Beats has expanded beyond headphones into accessories, including iPhone cases and USB-C cables. The report says the brand could let Apple enter gaming at a broader price range, using less expensive materials and finishes than those associated with Apple products.

Gaming’s lifestyle could also fit Beats.

Apple already supports the category through third-party hardware. It sells Sony’s PlayStation DualSense in its stores and supports them. Apple Arcade offers more than 200 games, including titles with controller support.

Gamers Question Apple’s Controller Strategy

Reactions on X have focused on pricing and differentiation.

@kkmksaa argued that an accessory makes more sense than creating a new console and platform, while @KellyBeth127178 said, “iPhone gaming just leveled up” if pricing does not become a problem. Meanwhile, @CryptonautB questioned whether Apple can deliver a design “that doesn’t already exist.”

Apple has not confirmed the controllers, and pricing and release timing remain unknown.
