  • Western markets bear the brunt of the crisis, with North America and Europe accounting for 95% of all gaming industry layoffs.
  • Accelerating studio redundancies and major Xbox cuts have driven confirmed job losses to 9,781, pushing five-year totals toward 60,000.

The global video game industry is facing a deepening employment crisis that is devastating the creative workforce behind our favorite digital worlds. New data from the ASGC Games Industry Layoffs Tracker predicts that job losses will reach an alarming 14,259 by the end of 2026. For the talented developers, writers, and artists who fuel today's gaming culture, this grim projection represents a 78% increase over the initial forecast for the year, signaling an incredibly tough road ahead for the people who bring these experiences to life.

The reality of these cuts has escalated far quicker than anyone expected. In January, the ASGC initially projected that 8,025 layoffs would take place in 2026. However, as of a recent update on July 26, that figure has already risen to 9,781 confirmed job losses. Amir Satvat, the business development director at Tencent Games who maintains the tracker, highlighted the sudden severity of the situation. "The pace of layoffs is accelerating faster than our models initially predicted," Satvat said in a report, underscoring the anxiety rippling through development studios everywhere.

Recent weeks have been particularly brutal for the individuals on the front lines of game development. A previous forecast on July 10 projected 13,878 overall layoffs, but the industry saw an increase of 381 redundancies in just over two weeks following that update. These recent cuts stripped livelihoods from 51 staff members at Ubisoft Barcelona, 32 at ZA/UM, 22 at Red Rover Interactive, and 20 at 11 Bit Studios.

This devastating wave directly followed the first major round of Xbox layoffs, which affected 1,600 employees across celebrated Microsoft-owned studios like Bethesda, Obsidian, Id Software, and Zenimax Online Studios.

Geographic Heartbreak: Western Markets Face the Brunt

Geographically, the heartbreak of these industry-wide cuts is heavily concentrated in Western markets, fundamentally shifting the map of game development. North America has borne the brunt of the crisis, accounting for 66% of all layoffs and 79% of the affected workers, as per Gamesindustry.biz.

Within that region, for 2026, the United States accounts for 48% of the total, while Canada makes up 17%. Europe represents another 30% of the job losses. Combined, North America and Europe account for a staggering 95% of all gaming industry layoffs, leaving the Western development scene incredibly vulnerable.

The financial trajectory paints a concerning future for the gaming space. Following a brief decline to 9,197 job losses last year, this year is projected to exceed 2024's estimated total of 15,631 layoffs. Over five years, the total number of projected layoffs is expected to approach 60,000, representing a massive drain of creative talent.

Furthermore, the timeline for the industry's recovery remains uncertain. Regarding Microsoft's remaining 1,600 expected cuts, Satvat noted that the timing is unclear, and some could fall in the back half of fiscal year 2027, during calendar 2027. "I currently assume all will occur in 2026 and will revise the estimate as better information becomes available," he explained.
