  • Ghost’s new Operator Variant adds a twist to his iconic look.
  • Price and Valeria also receive unique cosmetic changes in the beta.
  • Infinity Ward continues refining multiplayer based on player feedback.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (CoD: MW4) has turned one of Ghost’s defining traits into a new cosmetic gag. The beta lets players remove his signature skull mask through the new Operator Variant feature, but instead of revealing Simon “Ghost” Riley’s face, the animation exposes another skull-covered mask.

The first beta runs through Aug 25. The open beta will follow from Aug 28 to Sep 1, giving players another chance to test MW4 ahead of its Oct 23, 2026, launch.

CoD: MW4 Expands Operator Customization

The Operator Variant system allows selected characters to change cosmetic elements through the emote wheel. Ghost removes his outer mask to reveal black camouflage around his eyes and a second cloth mask carrying another skull design.

The idea fits Ghost's history.

Simon “Ghost” Riley debuted in 2009's MW2 and became closely associated with the skull mask and his death following General Shepherd's betrayal. The new animation acknowledges that identity without actually exposing his face.

Other operators receive their own variations. Valeria can equip a hockey mask, while Captain Price can use a shotgun shell as a cigar, which remains visible in first person until the player respawns.

CoD: MW4 Beta Tests More Than Gameplay

The customization additions arrive alongside broader beta testing. Players have raised concerns about rapid time-to-kill, small maps, and spawns, prompting Infinity Ward to adjust weapon lethality, audio, TTK, and other systems. The studio has described the beta as an important part of refining multiplayer.

Lead game designer, Jackie Reynolds, described the beta as the start of a conversation with the public. “We also have parts of our rich sandbox that we have in our multiplayer coming over from DMZ,” Reynolds said, pointing to the systems being carried across the CoD experience.

Ultimately, MW4 uses Ghost’s evolving appearance to add personality to its beta while keeping his identity recognizable.
