Highlights

  • Epic Games unveiled Unreal Engine 6 during the RLCS 2026 Paris Major, using Rocket League as the first showcase.
  • The teaser featured upgraded visuals, ray-traced lighting, and Rocket League’s transition away from Unreal Engine 3.
  • Competitive players are closely watching whether the engine shift affects Rocket League’s core gameplay physics.

Epic Games officially revealed Unreal Engine 6 (UE6) during the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) 2026 Paris Major. Rocket League served as the first public showcase for the company's next-generation engine technology.

The teaser trailer premiered during the live event in Paris on May 24, 2026. It confirmed that Rocket League is moving beyond Unreal Engine 3, the technology the game has relied on since its original release. The footage showed upgraded stadium environments, reflective surfaces, ray-traced lighting, and revised vehicle customization previews, before ending with the Unreal Engine 6 logo.

Epic Games and Psyonix, the developer behind Rocket League, did not clarify whether the project represents a sequel, a standalone relaunch, or a major overhaul of the current live-service version of Rocket League. The announcement comes four years after Unreal Engine 5 launched and roughly 12 years after Unreal Engine 4 first entered widespread development use.

Rocket League Transition Puts Focus on Unreal Engine 6 Performance

The reveal immediately drew attention because Rocket League still operates on technology associated with the Xbox 360 generation. Developers and players have long argued that Unreal Engine 3 limited the game’s ability to evolve technically while also complicating development workflows for newer teams more familiar with modern Unreal pipelines.

The first Unreal Engine 6 footage emphasized visual fidelity, with cinematic camera angles and high-end lighting effects featured throughout the teaser. Earlier discussions surrounding Unreal Engine 6 suggested Epic is prioritizing improved multi-threading support. This addresses an area where Unreal Engine 5 has faced criticism for CPU-heavy workloads and inconsistent PC optimization.

Epic is also expected to expand the use of Verse, the scripting language currently tied to Unreal Editor for Fortnite, as part of its broader ecosystem strategy.

Rocket League Community Watches Physics Concerns Closely

While the graphical upgrade generated excitement, competitive players quickly raised concerns about gameplay physics. Rocket League’s esports identity is built around precise ball interaction and vehicle movement, and even small gameplay changes could affect competitive balance.

The reveal also included brief shots referencing Fortnite and LEGO experiences, reinforcing Epic’s long-term push toward interconnected games and creator-driven platforms.

The announcement marks the beginning of Epic's next engine cycle. Unreal Engine currently powers projects across game development, film and television production, architecture visualization, and live virtual production.
