Highlights

  • Forza Horizon 6 broke Xbox records, peaking at over 300,000 concurrent players on Steam thanks to its popular Japan setting.
  • The open-world racer rapidly surpassed 6 million total players across PC, Xbox, and Game Pass, eclipsing the Motorsport series.
  • Playground Games is actively deploying monthly content updates and bug fixes despite ongoing internal Microsoft controversies.

Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 6 is an absolute runaway hit, speeding past expectations to become the biggest Steam launch in Xbox Game Studios' history. The addition of a gorgeous Japanese setting, complete with giant mechs, kei trucks, and Babymetal, has resonated deeply with fans. The open-world racing sequel is selling like hotcakes, proving that the franchise's approachable simcade formula is exactly what the global PC gaming community is craving right now.

The statistics behind the launch are staggering. According to real-time data from SteamDB, the game steadily climbed to a towering peak of 302,645 concurrent players on Valve's platform. This massive turnout comfortably places Forza Horizon 6 in Steam’s top five most-played games right now, overtaking multiplayer heavyweights like Apex Legends and Slay the Spire 2

Currently, the racing simulator only trails behind long-standing giants Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG: Battlegrounds. To put this growth into perspective, this represents a monumental 273% increase over its predecessor, Forza Horizon 5, which topped out at just over 81,000 concurrent players. While early access saw a strong peak, the game truly shattered expectations on its general launch day, drawing over 273,000 concurrent players to instantly break the previous Xbox concurrency record held by Halo Infinite

Horizon Leaves Motorsport in the Dust with 6M Players

Beyond Steam's ecosystem, the overall player base is significantly larger. Playground Games and Xbox confirmed that Forza Horizon 6 surged past 6M total players across Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, and Xbox Game Pass within mere days of release. This commercial dominance makes it easy to predict that the Horizon spin-offs are the undeniable future of the Forza franchise writ large.

According to Jason Schreier, former employee Fred Russell claimed the main Motorsport series was dead last year, following a monsoon of Microsoft layoffs that reportedly cut developer Turn 10 in half. The massive success of Horizon 6, which easily weathered pre-release leaks and doled out 8,000-year bans to early offenders, seems to leave its simulation forebear in the dust, as per PC Gamer.

This record-breaking launch has materialized even as publisher Microsoft faces significant external pressure and internal friction. Microsoft is currently listed as a pressure target, and Xbox as a priority target, by the BDS movement protesting the tech giant's contracts with Israel amid the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. This situation has generated turmoil within the company. Employees have organized protests, developers at Microsoft-owned studio Arkane have publicly spoken out on the issue, and just earlier this month, the company fired the head of an Israeli subsidiary over the surveillance of Palestinians, as per PC Gamer.

Despite the broader company controversies, the development team at Playground Games is shifting gears to focus on the game's immediate future and aftermarket support. In a blog post released on Friday, 22 May 2026, the studio acknowledged the overwhelming reception and detailed their plans to address early optimization issues, PC crash bugs, and drivatar AI difficulty.

Players currently have a whopping 618 vehicles to unlock and smash through billboards with, but much more is on the way. The studio is rolling out monthly content updates for the expansive Japan map, starting with the active "Welcome to Japan" Festival Playlist, followed by the premium "Italian Passion" car pack in July and two major expansions currently in the pipeline.
