Rockstar Games has addressed the ongoing Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) leaks less than a day before the game's first major official gameplay presentation. In a statement posted on X on Aug 26, 2026, the studio said the unauthorized footage has been difficult for its development team to see. Rockstar also confirmed that the extended look will proceed on Aug 27 without any delay.
Rockstar described the leaks as “heartbreaking” and pointed out that they were not how it intended players to see the game.
The studio also apologized for the lengthy development period, saying the game is “nearly there,” and thanked fans who supported the team during the past week. Rockstar also asked players to wait for the official experience when GTA 6 launches.
GTA 6 Leaks Expand Across Gameplay and Story
The response follows a sustained leak campaign attributed to CyberLeek. By Aug 26, the material included 16 gameplay clips and three map screenshots.
The leaked content covers:
- A fictional video game store containing spoof consoles and games such as Glory Souls 2, Desolate Rim, and We Came Together.
- Jason stealing a security guard's taser and attacking the guard.
- A healing item called Zombix, whose effects reportedly weaken with repeated use.
- Jason flying over Vice City during the day and at night.
- Jason Duval playing basketball and driving around Vice City.
- Two clips featuring a high-end sports car and a later armed robbery.
- A strip club sequence followed by part of an in-game cutscene.
- Jason exploring a nudist colony and attacking NPCs.
- A nightclub interior sequence.
- Jason cycling along a beach crowded with NPCs.
- Map footage showing Dalton Island, Tequesta Retreat, Gloriana Key, and Catalan Key.
- A gas station sequence involving a stolen truck carrying gasoline.
- A clip in which Jason steals a hotrod and evades police before Lucia Caminos appears in a cutscene.
- A 4.5-minute prologue featuring Lucia, which contains minor story spoilers.
The campaign initially focused on gameplay and environmental footage, but the Lucia material marked a shift into story content. CyberLeek has also reportedly promoted a cryptocurrency token and used paid polls to let users vote on which footage should be released next. Its messaging has framed the leaks as a protest against the move away from physical game media, particularly over ownership and resale rights.
At least one person also filmed themselves eating a leek outside Rockstar North in Scotland.
However, CyberLeek reportedly activated a “dead man lock” as an added security measure in case Rockstar identified or located those behind the operation. Such a mechanism is designed to automatically release previously withheld information or material if the person controlling it fails to perform a required action within a set period, creating a safeguard against the operation being shut down.
Take-Two Pursues GTA 6 Leak Source
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, began seeking information about the source on August 20 through subpoenas involving Microsoft and Discord. It subsequently pursued information involving Google and X.
The legal filings refer to the material as “stolen content” and seek information that could identify those responsible, along with action involving copyrighted material.
CyberLeek continued releasing videos for eight consecutive days despite the legal efforts. The material has also been mixed with AI-generated GTA 6 videos circulating online, making individual clips difficult to authenticate independently. Rockstar's acknowledgment of the leak, however, confirms that unauthorized gameplay footage has affected the project.
GTA 6 Extended Look Sets Up Official Reveal
The timing puts the leak campaign directly ahead of Rockstar's planned extended presentation. The showcase is scheduled for Aug 27 at 3 pm ET on Netflix, followed by its release through Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA 6 website at 9 pm ET.
The game has been in the spotlight since its first trailer arrived in December 2023, followed by a second trailer in May 2025. Its release was initially planned for 2025 before moving to May 26, 2026, and then Nov 19, 2026. That date remains unchanged, with GTA 6 scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
