- PlayStation has scaled back GTA VI promotions after the pre-order launch.
- The move comes amid backlash over Sony's plan to end physical game discs.
- There is no evidence that Rockstar has changed its marketing partnership with Sony.
PlayStation has quietly scaled back its GTA VI marketing just days after pre-orders opened. Several promotional assets have disappeared from the PlayStation App, PS5 dashboard, and PlayStation Store. The timing has sparked speculation because it comes as Sony faces growing criticism over its decision to end physical PlayStation game discs.
The changes include the removal of Leonida-themed dashboard artwork, the GTA VI-themed PlayStation App icon, and other launch week promotions.
@ConstantGTA claimed on X that "Rockstar reportedly told Sony to remove GTA VI's branding from the PlayStation App after the disc controversy got too hot.” The post also pointed to the PlayStation Store redesign and dashboard takeover disappearing. However, neither Rockstar Games nor Sony has confirmed the claim, and there is no evidence that their marketing partnership has changed.
GTA VI Promotion Overlaps with Sony's Digital Shift
Sony recently announced that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 will no longer ship on physical discs. The decision has drawn criticism from retailers, collectors, preservation advocates, and politicians.
Many argue that a digital-only future limits ownership, resale, and long-term game preservation.
Rockstar has also faced criticism over GTA VI's distribution. Some editions use a digital code-in-box instead of a traditional game disc. That makes it less likely the studio would publicly distance itself from Sony over a similar approach.

More GTA VI Marketing is Likely on the Way
A more likely explanation is that Sony has simply concluded the first phase of its GTA VI pre-order marketing campaign, with additional promotions expected closer to launch. Continuous platform takeovers are uncommon.
With GTA VI launching on Nov 19, 2026, more screenshots, another trailer, and a rumored PS5 bundle are still expected before release. For now, the reduced PlayStation branding appears to be a planned pause rather than a sign of problems between Sony and Rockstar Games.
