Highlights

  • Halo Studios’ original three-game roadmap apparently narrowed to Campaign Evolved after two projects stalled.
  • The canceled Project Ekur underwent multiple changes in direction before its developers were reassigned.
  • Halo Fest could reveal an early-stage project, while potential Campaign Evolved DLC is also under consideration.

Halo Studios reportedly has no new mainline campaign or multiplayer game in full development after Halo: Campaign Evolved. Video game reporter, Rebs Gaming, claims the studio is instead working on early concepts. Employees are also reportedly concerned about Halo's future and possible layoffs.

The studio's original three-year roadmap reportedly included Campaign Evolved, multiplayer project Ekur, and a new campaign known as Next. Only Campaign Evolved made it through development. Ekur was canceled, while Next entered limbo.

Project Ekur Cancellation Leaves Halo Roadmap Unclear

Ekur reportedly emerged from the canceled battle royale Project Tatanka. It then became Halo Studios' first Unreal Engine (UE) project. The game was initially designed as an extraction shooter and large-scale team multiplayer hybrid before studio head Pierre Hintze shifted it back toward battle royale.

Rebs Gaming claims Ekur was intended to be Halo's next multiplayer game. Classic multiplayer modes were not planned for launch despite internal concerns. Some developers pushed for an arena mode, but leadership reportedly planned to consider it only after release.

Development later shifted toward Campaign Evolved when the remake ran into production problems. Ekur developers were reassigned before the multiplayer project was canceled. The report indicated that handling multiple projects had proved difficult for leadership.

Next likewise struggled to gain traction. The studio reportedly lacked a clear plan and vision for the campaign. Only a small team was hired, while the creative director position remained vacant despite multiple interviews.

The analysis also points to uncertainty around potential Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes. Two direct sources cited by Rebs Gaming stated they knew nothing about a rumored Halo massively multiplayer online (MMO) game involving the studio.

Halo Fest Could Offer Clues About What Comes Next

Ekur had been considered for an early access or soft launch at Halo Fest in December 2026, marking Halo's 25th anniversary. However, it was reportedly behind schedule and could have required significant crunch after Campaign Evolved.

With Ekur canceled, Rebs Gaming noted that the "best-case scenario" for Halo Fest is an early-development project announcement. Campaign Evolved downloadable content (DLC) is also being explored as Halo Studios determines the franchise's next step.
